dead pc

my pc has died and by process of elimination i've narrowed it down to either the cpu or the motherboard. does anyone know of a way to in which i can find out which one is the problem without taking pot luck and buying a replacement part. only thing i could think of was to take the ram out and the board gave me the 3 beep error but is this an sign that the board is fine???

all advice welcome

  • does anything come on screen?

if it beeps, it sounds like the motherboard may be ok.

    is it a self build?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • if it beeps during post it's almost certainly the mobo that's fried :)

no, the monitor doesnt switch on from being on standby, when i tried the hard drive in another machine it locked up during boot and i've had to format it.
