.People at work (office) seem to change their clothes every day and even admit to wearing jeans only once or twice before washing.

Bet they wouldn't be doing this if they had to do it themselves all by hand and didn't have washing machines ! I also sometimes think we wash clothes far too frequently.

My favourite embarrassing one is saving on laundry costs by wearing the same clothes multiple days before washing them...

been wearing this current pair of jeans for over a month I think

i think if you keep yourself clean your clothes will stay cleaner longer too
  • I have a "You never know when it might come in handy" box on my shelf with elastic bands dropped by the postman, old cable ties, odd bits of foam padding, cotton reels, etc... If I find something that might come in handy, in it goes!

Trying for daily wins, and a little security in an insecure world.
  • Im collecting all the tiny bits of cheese that get left over at the end of a packet and no one will eat and freeze them together in a bag, when there is ebough I make a cheese sauce or use them in a dish, the different tastes make it more interesting!

We have one of these in our house. Unfortunately it's rather bigger than yours. It's called "The Loft" . After 30+ years of my OH putting his "Might Come In Useful" stuff up there, the ceilings are beginng to bow! Heaven only know's what he plans to do with it all in the afterlife. It's certainly no use now as we've totally forgotten what's up there :rotfl:

  • Going back to the teabag recycling on the first page....

In school I had a sewing teacher who told us that she made fabric from used teabags. She'd take out the actual tea and wash the bag, then sew them together to make a sheet of fabric. God knows what she used it for...we all thought she was a bit batty after that!

We get a lot ofenvelopes with stamps on which haven't been franked, or with very light franking marks (especially just before Christmas). The Post Office have stopped people from steaming these off to re-use, by selling self-adhesive stamps, but a dose of sellotape remover on the back of the piece of paper to which the stamp is attached will usually loosen it within a minute or so. With care, the removed stamp will still be sticky enough to be stuck straight onto the new envelope. Failing that, I'm afraid you will need to invest in a small dollop of 'Pritt' or something similar.

It's probably illegal, but given the fact that the Post Office loses, thieves or damages so much mail, I don't feel the slightest bit guilty.

If you post an item with stamps that have already been through the postal system then it is not "probably illegal". It is - and known as theft.

  • I buy large bags of pony carrots for £1.50 for consumption by my pets ... but will also use them for human consumption too! - a carrot is a carrot after all!

Wear up faded or laddered tights underneath long skirt and boots outfit - God forbid ever getting knocked over by a bus though!

Save all fat from cooking meat during winter to make dripping sandwiches from loaf end and crusts for the birds :)

After washing up, use the remaining water to wash up cat and dog dishes and then rinse out tins for recycling.

Collect twigs in a carrier bag when walking the dog to save on sticks for making the fire.

Gather nuts, brambles, elderberries etc from the woods and hedgerows for wine and jam making

DD1 and DD2 are at an age when everything that I do is embarassing so its not hard to think of lots of things! :rotfl:

Ah, but fast forward 25 or 30 years, and your thrifty habits will have become family folklore, remembered gratefully by your daughters when they are struggling to manage their own household budgets at times when money is tight.
