GATSO speed cameras

Hi I wonder if anyone can help.
Last night driving down a dual carriageway I know well - there is a speed camera in the central reservation (the old Gatso type) which catches people on the other side of the road (i,e. driving away from it).
I was driving a little over the limit (I know, I know) and it flashed, but this was I was facing it. I seem to recall reading somewhere this can sometimes happen.
Am I right in thinking that Gatso's can't do both traffic going away from it (as normal) and driving towards it?
Thoughts appreciated.
Many thanks

I was under the impression that you had to be driving towards it in order to get caught. The reason being that they can't prove who was driving if theyre taking an !!!!!! end shotThis country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0

They don't have to prove it under our anti-motorist, money making system. You have to either incriminate yourself or "snitch" on someone else when they ask you who was driving at the time !
I understand this one is on it's way to the European Court of Human Rights - be interesting if the Govt lose on this one.0 -
I heard a story about speed cameras in Germany, not sure if it's true or not.
The camera took a picture of the font of the car as it headed towards the camera getting both the driver and the passenger. People complained and said that the passenger had nothing to do with it, and their picture should not be taken. So the camera's were modified to only take the picture of the driver. So then anyone who wanted to speed just bought a foreign car with the steering wheel on the other side. So then all the camera got was a picture of an empty passenger seat!Looking to raise some money0 -
Gatsos can flash when you drive towards them, but the pictures will be of no use and you won't be charged for it.
Truvelo cameras face towards you buy don't flash.Happy chappy0 -

Gatso's have a tendency to flash even as you are approaching them, but unless pointing in your direction of travel - you won't receive anything nasty in the post.
Likewise - if the Gatso flashes once, you cannot be prosecuted. Although the camera will record you are speeding, to prosecute - it needs two pics (spaced 0.7 seconds apart) to confirm the distance travelled in that time (thus the markings on the road).
Truvelos snap as you approach them, but I haven't seen any down my way.
SPECS are a snidey piece of kit. Fairly discreet as they are small (albeit they are generally all yellow) but can be mistaken for traffic master monitors. They measure your average speed over a particular distance.
For those in Sussex, checkout http://www.sussexsafetycameras.gov.uk/sites.htm which gives you a list of camera sites, and where the mobile speed checks will be taking place over the coming week. (I'm sure there are sites for other counties too)'Money can't buy you happiness, but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery'0 -

I particularly liked; "Police chiefs were last night forced to urge drivers not to exploit the shortcoming by trying to evade the cameras."
The police may not all be stupid, but you have to admit, at times, they do their best to appear that way !0 -
