temporary lay off

Options
I am an electrician and i have been temporarily laid off for about 6 weeks now due to a lack of work at my company.

I read on the direct.gov website that i could request redundancy due to the time i have been off, and the lack of upcoming work. Would me requesting redundancy effect any benefits i can claim such as job seekers allowance? I dont want to make the decision and then be stuck with no money coming in.

Thank you in advance for any advice given.

  • Hi,
I am sorry to hear this, Have you been told 'Verbally' or in writing that you are laid off for 6 weeks?

The company could extend the 6 weeks to - 8 - 12 weeks etc.

As many many companies are looking at the minute at short term work.

I would sign on - As a safeguard anyway.

I hope you do okay eitherway.

  • Thanks for the reply BYALPHAINDIA, and sorry for the late reply i miss placed my password.

Basically what happened was i went on holiday to america for two weeks and on the day I was due to start back at work I received a phone call from work explaining that while i was away work had slowed down and that there was no work for me. I was told it was upto me if i wanted to leave and find another job or stay at home and wait for the work to come in, so rather than walking out of a job i decided to wait for work.

I have now been out of work for about 6 weeks and there is no sign of any upcoming work. I looked into what i could do and came across the direct.gov website that says I can request to be made redundant ( i would have posted a link but the forum will not let new members). My only concern was that if I took this route would it effect me claiming job seekers allowance due to me choosing to leave my job?

If nobody is clear on this i will have to ring ACAS but due to only having a mobile phone to use it will cost me a small fortune calling there number, which i dont fancy as im struggling to pay bills already.

Any help would be be greatly aprreciated

You are still dismissed by resaon of redundancy and JSA should pay.

You should have started looking for other work evben part time no need to resign till you have something that needs you too.

Have they paid the 5 days guarentee pay?
  • No i haven't received any guarantee pay yet.I have been looking for work all the time i have been off and could really do with the redundancy money to pay my next month of bills. This is not the first time this year that i have been temporarily laid off so my savings have already took a bit of a battering.

Thank you for the help and advice
