Bank account help - any ideas?!

Nationwide would *probably* give you a full FlexAccount with debit card & cheque book.
Avoid Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank like the plague.0 -
Good news, folks. I managed to open my account last week with the letter from the college, and this morning I received a Visa (not electron) debit card andn PIN.
Although it's not a cheque guarantee one, I already have a cheque book with the savings account, so if I ever need to write a cheque I'll use that. The debit card is useful though.
Cheers all for your advice.
What is the purpose of a cheque guarantee card though?0 -
AFAIK, if you want to pay with a cheque in a shop, the 'guarantee' part shows the shop that the bank will honour the check (to the guarantee amount) and not bounce it if you don't have the funds.0

Without a guarantee card you can forget using cheques in the majority of large stores but since it's a debit card then why bother writing out a cheque anyway?
