Praise for the ambulance

I just wanted to give praise to the (south east coast) ambulance service...

Last night my boyfriend (a type 1 diabetic) became completely unresponsive and I had to ring for an ambulance at just got 1am. They arrived within 10 minutes, asked me as much as I knew of his medical history and then set about getting him concious again. They managed to get a glucose solution down him and stayed around for half an hour afterwards to check his blood sugar levels after he had something to eat.

I'd never seen my boyfriend have a diabetic episode before, so I was very worried, but the ambulance crew reassured me and left me with a tube of glucose to give him if necessary - when they left then said that if I was worried not to hesitate to ring them again.

Both lovely guys - they put my mind to rest and got my boyfriend concious again. The NHS are often criticised but I thought that in light of my experience last night I should praise the ambulance for their hard work.

  • I was in a car accident last year. Lovely ambulance people arrived and they checked me over. I wanted to go home but they explained why I should be taken to hospital for checks before that. Sensible advice in hindsight...
I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.
  • I've just been on two first aid courses run by a ex-paramedic and he said that the most important part of the job was being able to make the patient and those around them feel safe.

I think they do a ruddy fantastic job!

OP - I'm glad your OH is feeling better and that you are too!
  • Praise to all our overworked frontline NHS workers. Their care and devotion is a credit to our nation.

I October I slipped and broke my leg whilst on holiday in Cornwall. Hubby and I were on the coastal path in the middle of nowhere. Within 15 minutes of hubby calling 999 the Coastguards were on the scene followed by the Cornwall Air Ambulace were I was airlifted to Truro hospital. As we had our dog with us and she couldnt come to the hospital one of the coastguards took her home with him.

We do like to complain about the NHS but we are so so lucky to have them. My sister lives in South Africa were there is no free health service and you have to have medical insurance. My sister is very ill with cancer and before she can have any treatment she has to get approval from the insurance company. This is the last thing you need to be doing when you are ill. She recently broke her leg (she has bone cancer), the medical aid ambulance took 4 and a half hours to respond........

I have to say I personally can't fault the ambulance service - after a car accident when I was a bit younger (have to admit the event is a bit hazy) but I think they came bleeding quickly. I remember them putting me on the stretcher and telling me not to worry - it was a long way to the hospital but the ambulance guy was lovely and talked to me the whole time and calmed me down. :)
