Splitting the cost of paperwork?

Hi there,

First time poster, occasional lurker. I'm supposed to be moving into a new flat in a few days, but I just got a text from the girl currently living there saying that the paperwork for swapping the names on the tenancy agreement will be around £300. This seems expensive, but not horribly unreasonable.

She offered to split the cost £150 each, but I think it's her responsibility to pay it, in the same way it would be mine if I wanted to move out of the property early. Is there a standard etquette for this?

Thanks for any advice
Oliver

  • She is leaving early and you are taking her place as sole tenant?

If this is the case, you will end up with a totally new tenancy with your own agreement and her agreement will be voided. Not a case of swapping names. You are doing her enough of a favour already by giving her the freedom to leave.

  • I agree not sure why there would be a fee for removing her name probably an early termination fee. In situations like this I think it's better to pay your own bills yourself and leave others to do the same
  • Sorry, I should have said; it's a flatshare with two other people, she wants to leave early.

    Thanks for the advice :)

Not your problem - don't bother paying any of it.

It's usual for the T who is seeking to renege on their contract terms to be asked to foot the bill for the costs involved in getting a replacement T in.

That said, you are getting to move in to somewhere you'd like to live and in the normal course of events would probably have to stump up some sort of spurious LA admin fee, so may perhaps feel happy to make a small contribution?

You may want to thoroughly check this LA/LLs fee structures *before* you sign up for the tenancy so that there are no nasty surprises for you further down the line.
