You aren't paying for the mistake though you are paying for the gas that you have used and only for the last year... You should be able to split the payment of £600 into monthly payments over the next year.

Hi c.l.j.w - I'm a bit puzzled as you say it was a meter reader who picked up on this Imperial/Metric meter mix-up, as usually you would have to have a bill in your hand whilst looking at the meter to realise the error, and even then his advice was that you were being overcharged rather than undercharged.
You have probably been thro' all this, but if not just check that your meter is marked either ft3 forImperial or m3 for Metric

If indeed you have been charged Metric with an Imperial meter, then I would be angry too, but as HappyMJ as pointed out you are only being asked to pay for gas you have used

But I'm afraid you still need to work out what your annual Gas costs really are to budget for them.
Each unit on an Imperial meter delivers appx 31 Kwh of gas, whilst a Metric unit delivers appx 11
So - look at all your past bills and divide the final cost by 11, then multiply it by 31 which will give a rough figure of the cost should have been.

One last point is that if you do Switch suppliers, you emphasise to the new supplier that you have an Imperial meter.

It may be the suppliers fault, or the records may have already been wrong at the outset or when they became the supplier. This is why the above point is sound, until the national database is updated any new supplier would take over the details as they are.

  • Our gas meter is measured in cubic feet, but they do the maths to bill us in cubic meters.
Could it not just be that you didn't give a reading for ages and so were paying on estimated readings? Then when a reading was done it turns out you used more than they estimated?
I think the imperial/metric thing is a red-herring, as they can tell the metering type from the serial number.
  • Believe it or not companies can and do bill on the wrong type of meter. Usually because the details were wrong to begin with, or details of a meter exchange haven't come through.
