we're currently doing wage negotiations at work, employers have offered 5% which i think is a decent offer, we currently still get our christmas bonus around £600-700, plus we get an annual bonus of a minimum 10% of our salary, company contributed pension,healthcare,£30k social budget (to use as we please thru the social committee for days/nites out, family days/events etc)per annum,as well as alot of other things, it's amazing the greed of others who are still screaming about an extra 1%.. am i alone in disbelief of peoples greed?

Wow that is good!
I never really understand why a company offers things like 30k social budget because when the tough times hit its just another thing to argue over. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

They should be told what people are told where I live, even in the good times when offering minimum wage you're told "you're lucky to have a job".0

woo thats crazy! our wages have all been frozen...we don't get anything for free! a social budget? that would be great!! bonuses and 5% wage increases...honestly, i'd bite your fingers off for half of that!! times are hard, if people don't realise that they are ignorant to the current climate. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. not had a salary increase in about 3 years, we have closed umpteen offices and various companies have gone bust - some people should just be kicked out and their jobs given to people who can reside in the real world.Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying :mad:0 -

i've never agreed with the term "you're lucky to have a job" i honestly believe an employer is lucky to have you, without the employee they would have no business, could be the chicken and egg senario too i suppose. I appreciate we are lucky without doubt, it astounds me the greed of some people as we're very spoiled as it is. the social budget has always been in place as the company is very big on team building and family bonding etc, although with some you'd think they got nothing.0

At the end of the day you should get paid market market, for your industry, and how productive an employee you are. This 'I need 5% a year increase' attitude makes no economic sense to me. If you want a 5% annual pay increase you better make sure your skills are worth a 5% pay increase to your employer.
If there's one thing the unions should be doing, and I assume it's public sector were talking about, is demanding performance related pay so that they don't need to fight over silly 1% changes in pay every year. But of course they actively campaign against performance related pay. I wonder why that is.0 -
Another one here thinking "Have you got any vacancies?"
Where did you find a firm that treats employees reasonably? There aint many of them around....
What sort of sector do we all need to look to to find that sort of employer?
I expect they get what they pay for - ie a reasonable degree of commitment from their staff. Unlike other employers - including mine - where you sit there and work out "What is fair from us employees for what they pay us/the conditions we have?"
Good luck to you..
(anyways - answering the question - I worked out what interest I need on my savings to match inflation and it seems to be currently 4.5% net. Thats with me being a standard rate taxpayer.). So 6% is what is necessary as a cost of living rise at the moment to ensure one doesnt have a de facto "paycut".0 -

this is not the public sector, it's a union directed business but by no means a closed shop, many of the employees see no reason to be in the union(me included)mainly the union members who are whinging to be honest and are more than likely set in their ways as older employees.Another one here thinking "Have you got any vacancies?"

There are vacancies to be honest depends on your field i suppose, many may not be surprised to learn it is infact the Oil Industry i work in, even with all these conditions in place it still astounds me the mentality of some people ,have the attitude "i F**king hate this place", but when they are asked why they still work here they retort "goota be somewhere". with that in mind i suppose the company does not really benefit from loyalty from people like that. thankfully most employees here realise they are pretty well off0
