pc problem

My FILaw had a few problems with his pc recently...viruses etc etc.
He had not much on it so opted to re-load windows again and format the HD.
I can just about manage to do that for him. The pc asked me where to save the new copy of windows.
If I can remember rightly, it gave me two options, 1 windows home edition, 2 windows setup.

I chose windows home. It asked to overwrite the copy on the pc..I said yes and everything loaded ok. I set up and loaded all of his software and broadband etc.
I loaded a new version of norton and everything is working ok.

Here's the problem. When I set norton off doing a full system scan, it was scanning everything that was supposed to be wiped off with the format.
There are hardly any programs in the start menu, yet it was scanning stuff the pc used to hold.

Is it possible that the last time I tried all of this I might have loaded all the new stuff on the windows set up option by mistake. ?

If so, all the old files will still be on another part of the drive....how can I delete them....is it possible to format part of the drive ?

You should have formatted the drive first. Re-Install the windows and format the drive first, you will only have have issues. That is the C drive which is normally where windows is installed.
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
  • I dont think there is an option to do it in any other way than the way I did it...its a factory supplied disk.
You just bung it in the cd drive and press go.
There were 3 options to start with. Format & Load new/ Repair Existing / exit
Occasionally I got asked a question or two.

You want to do a Full PC format... select option "format & load new", select your Harddrive, and follow the instructions... Do a full format (NTFS) if the PC doesnt have/use WinME/98/95 etc
  • I chose that option.

I think this time, I chose 'windows home' to overwrite.
Last time this happened, I'm not sure I chose windows home, I think I chose windows set up thinking I was setting up a new version of windows.
I think I have a 2 copies of windows on the HD now. I just need to delete the 'windows set up' version.
