CA Security

Hi everyone,

I am looking to buy security for my laptop- firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware etc.
Last year my laptop got a virus, I had to take it to a computer shop to get it fixed, all such a pain etc. The man who fixed it installed CA Security Centre, I have had no problems since...I've checked on their website and it's £49.99.

I wanted to check if there is any provider with a similar level of security but for a cheaper price? I'd like to get the best deal, of course, if possible (I'm a student so on a tight budget)...

Any thoughts re CA or good/bad experiences?

Many thanks in advance

Don't buy anything, there's plenty of free options - AVG, Spybot, Adaware

Also, don't click on dodgy emails and you'll save yourself 99% of the problems you had before.

ok thanks a lot for that- if I do install lot of free security, will there be issues with the programs interferring with each other?

I can use computers ok, but I'm not that great when it comes to sorting out problems with programs/installing/uninstalling etc.
  • Surely not
    CA Security Centre
do you mean Computer Associates do they still exist and I would not depend on them for PC security , so many problems with them in another life on corporate Unix/IBM systems urrrrrgh, off to google for this;)

Good advice from a Mac user, Not.

    Definitely not AVG or Adaware.

Avast, is probably your best bet.

    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Download the FREE version, gives you 60 (?) days to register to receive a free 12mth licence.

You won't get spammed by them either, so don't worry about giving them your email address.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Hi everyone, thanks for your help so far!

I have downloaded Avast, which looks very comprehensive- got the 30 day trial but then it seems I'll have to pay ~£45 for a years worth of protection...am I missing something here, you have all commented that you can get protection without paying but how can I do this with Avast please?

Sorry if I have missed something quite basic, thanks in advance
  • You've downloaded the wrong edition. I'd uninstall, then download and install this version:
