My Documents Clutter

Pretty annoying if you're used to XP and keeping your My Documents folder reserved for, you know, your documents. I don't know why they can't stick to AppData. I don't need to see my application settings and game save files every time.poppy100 -
Not really. From Vista onwards, software developers often store user data in My Documents. In my 'My Documents' folder I've got folders for Eidos (Champ Manager), DVDFab, iMacros, Konami (Pro Evo), Rockstar Games (GTA IV), Visual Studio amongst others. All large scale software developers who know what they are doing.

Until the time comes to backup/reformat.
The files are stored there so you can easily back up your stuff.0 -
Before Vista/Win7 it was quite easy keeping files in order now I find it almost impossible!
I have reinstalled XP many times and not lost a file but I dread doing it for Win7
What is the purpose of Libraries? It just seems to duplicate all my files.
Is there any need to hold data in paths like this file C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\sessions\ ?
If there is a simple way of storing files in Win7 I would love to know it.0 -
Libraries don't actually duplicate any files, they're just an alternative way of organising how you see them. Not sure why Windows can't just introduce proper symbolic links like every other OS uses.
Shortcuts are just files that tell Windows Explorer to go somewhere when you click on them. If you're just dealing with the filesystem it doesn't help - you can't use a path like C:\Users\asc99c\shortcut_to_photos\2010\photo1.jpg. In Linux/Unix/OSX a symbolic link is part of the low-level file system, and the above example does work. In fact it works perfectly enough that you wouldn't even bother calling it shortcut since you'd never need to worry about that, so it would just be /home/asc99c/photos/2010/photo1.jpg and photos might potentially point to another location on the disc, or possibly a different hard disc, or maybe a different machine on the network.0 -

You'd think, wouldn't you!supermonkey wrote: »I've tried deleting them, but they just come back. I guess they need to be moved from within the software that created - if thats possible.
Isn't it ANNOYING! I'm pretty sure the only reason is that they want to constantly remind you that their application is there... developers are clearly vain enough to think you want to use their particular application every day. If they provided the option to move this folder from within the program, that would be great. But they almost always don't.

Good point, didn't think of that one. Okay, you've almost made me change my opinion... almost. They should still provide the option to move them elsewhere.supermonkey wrote: »I think I might Create a "Documents" folder within My Documents. It will be less messy but longer - C:\Users\User\My Documents\Documents
This is a good idea. That way everything of yours is in one place and it's still backed up by simply backing up My Documents.
My choice though is to use a different piece of software that doesn't create a new folder in My Documents and force you to use it. That may be cutting off my nose to spite my face, but I feel quite strongly on this issue! You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.0 -

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this annoying.
I did read that Microsoft made it a requirement for games / apllications to do this.

Fair enough - it helps back up game saves etc, but some of this data does not need backing up!
And Libararies do not duplicate anything - think of them like links!
I can see why they are useful (eg change the display to by date or by file type) but I still prefer a normall folder structure. I have moved my personal documents into a new folder within my documents. And my documents library only contains this (then I have libraries for pictures, vids, music). That way I don't have to look at the clutter!0 -
In my "My Documents" folder right now, I have one of those special folders with its own special icon called "My Shapes". Unsurprisingly, it's empty. I don't even know what application put it there.
What are "Shapes"? And why would I want them? I don't currently have any "Shapes", I don't plan on getting any in the immediate future and certainly will never have enough to necessitate an entire "Shapes" folder. But can I delete the folder? Of course not! You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. 'The Favorites stencil is automatically created when you install Microsoft Office Visio and is located in the My Shapes folder under My Documents. As you work in Visio, consider using the Favorites stencil to store shapes that you:
Use often and want to find quickly.
Find in shape searches and want to use again.
Create yourself.
Modify for your own use.
You can easily save a copy of a shape by right-clicking the shape in a stencil, pointing to Add To My Shapes, and then clicking Favorites. Custom stencils that you create using the New Stencil command are also saved in the My Shapes folder by default.
To view your Favorites stencil or other custom stencils you create, on the File menu, point to Shapes, and then point to My Shapes.'

Thanks for the advice about Libraries.
After reading http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows-platform/articles/63985.aspx they seem like a good idea if you have your system set up correctly. However I would have thought the default setting should include everything rather than one folder!
It appears you can get rid of them quite easily though.0
