Be careful of overheating babies. They ususally sleep with a couple of layers on so they will not need as much heat as you think.

The reason they recommend celluar blankets is because they have holes in them if the baby gets stuck underneath they will not suffocate as there are plenty of holes in. My little one didn't sleep under any blankets. From 2 weeks old she kicked them off no matter how tight I put them on. In the end I put her to bed in a fleece sleepsuit with cotton grow bag underneath. She never got to cold then through lack of blankets.

i think cellular blankets holes are quite tiny so there's not much chance of getting fingers caught, but crocheted blankets, the kind grannies like to knit may be different as the stitches are looser?

has anyone used tescos own baby products?

i was in there today (a rare occasion but i had a voucher to save £2 when buying baby stuff and another to save £2.50 on clothes, both had min spend of £10, i got them from joining their baby club) and noticed value own brand baby shampoo, baby bath, baby lotion all for under 50p a bottle and then their next quality brand was around 90p a bottle. the value stuff all looked the same though, white bottle with tesco value on it, you'd have to look closely to read what each bottle contained, i'd be bound to misread it and use shampoo as bubble bath lol! i thought if the quality was okay maybe i could decant it into washed out johnsons bottles? baby bedtime bath, shampoo, pampers wipes etc. all on 2 for 1 too and huggies wipes reduced to £1.14 a pack.

I've never tried the tesco stuff but why were you thinking of decanting it into johnsons bottles? (just being nosey).

From the mum of a nearly 5 year old that doesn't like sleeping, i've never found that baby bathtime works!!! it came onto the market when he was a few months old and i had high hopes for it!! maybe it works on others.

re ;your question about the cellular blankets. SIL bought me a pink one from the hospital shop for daughter and the holes are tiny. I have older ones though given to me as well as ones knitted by relatives that did have bigger holes, and i didn't use these until she was older.

am a bit concerned about keeping it warm enough but then I was a Janaury baby in a similar house (colder in fact, it didin't have central heating!) & I have not only survived but have a good tolerance to cold now so it couldn't have done me too much harm! Obviously I'll make sure it's tucked in well & out of drafts. If necessary would an indvidual room heater, like one of those mini fan heater things, be OK?

The recommeded room temp for baby's room is about 15oC (with a couple of blankets). I always felt this was quite cold, so perhaps you won't need heating too much in the room. Check the temp in there first.

Talc can get trapped in their little folds of skin ie arms legs and groin area. These can get sore. So best avoided.

I agree with what everyone else has said - most products are overpriced and not necessary.
But the godsend that I couldn't live without is a Baby sleeping bag. Both mine have slept in them since 6 weeks old and they love them. They know when it is bed time and no matter where they sleep (hotels/Grandparents houses etc)they are comfortable.
It saves them getting cold when kicking the blankets off and when they become mobile (as they move everywhere!!!)
You can get different sizes and Togs so no matter what weather is it they will be happy - Last year my eldest slept in his Nappy and sleeping bag only and he was happy.
HTH and congratulations on the pregnancy.

Forgot to say that you have to shop around to get the best deals on Sleeping Bags. :o
I got mine from 'Bump to 3' but they are £25 each. I think Tesco's do them as well as Mothercare.
