Computers hate me!

Aargh. I am using my OH's computer at the moment, as she has gone away and taken the laptop. I watched something last night, then put the PC on hibernate and went out. When I got back, I turned the PC back on and found that there was suddenly no sound at all.

I have established that all the wires I can see which should be connected are connected - though there is no obvious reason why they should have come out, as I was out and we don't have a cat or dog which could have pulled them out. The power light is lit on the speakers and on the amp under the desk.

I have also checked that the volume is up and nothing is on mute. I have re-booted the pc just in case.

Does anyone have any ideas what else I could try (bearing in mind that I am supremely un-technical), or do I have to live without iplayer until she gets back to fix it?

Yes, I have tried youtube and 4oD. Not even the windows noise plays on startup.

  • It isnt a Dell laptop by any chance?
My Dell keeps doing this and is generally fixed with a reboot but seeing as you have already tried that all I can suggest it try rebooting again.
You could check to see if the Drivers have any yellow crosses against them tho but if you are a novice then you probs need to be walked through this.

try a reinstall of sound drivers and/or a system restore/ they don't hate you --- just treat them nicely ;)bad_boys_20.gif

  • goto control panel and uninstall the sound card download the latest driver then restart and let it reinstall hopefully that should solve the issue.

Windows sleep / hibernate functions are notoriously unreliable - best just to switch the thing off

  • Look in the system tray in the bottom right of the screen, find the speaker icon, right click and open the sound manager. Have a look around there, you will probably find that the sound has been turned off or disabled. Try checking a few boxes in there, you will probably get it working again.

if you have windows 7, is a 'known-ish' bug - Start > Control Panel > Device Manager; Locate your 'faulty' device in the list (in your case, probably IDHC Audio), right-click on it, select uninstall but do not remove driver when asked (only remove driver if it fails after next steps)

Go to Actions and select hardware changes (or similar) - rescan and W7 should pick up your 'lost' hardware again.

I really hope this is fixed in the next service pack!
