do I have to stay with BT?

sorry if a stupid question but I have Sky+ in my flat. Does this mean that I have to get my landline rental from BT as Sky use BT lines (other than get the landline from Sky I mean which I know is possible). Also how reliable is Sky for landline rental and tech support?
Are they any better than the dreaded 151?

Additionally, BT has just installed Infinity broadband in our area. Would this be another reason why I have to stay with BT?

thanks

  • The "Infinity - only from BT" ads are designed to mislead people into thinking that the FTTC broadband is only available from BT which is nonsense. "Infinity" is BT's "name" for their version of that product.

Sky don't have [currently] any plans to offer FTTC, which is the name for the product you're talking about and so people who have had FTTC put in round their area and who want quicker broadband will be deserting Sky now.

If you're interested in FTTC then you should look at suppliers who are offering it, BT is just one. Having FTTC broadband has nothing to do with the line rental part.

As regards Sky, I doubt they could be any worse than BT as regards support however you need to decide whether you want the FTTC broadband before you make a decision on the line rental potentially, because of something called Local Loop Unbundling. You cannot have the FTTC service with an unbundled voice line (so far as I know) unless you also take the FTTC service from the line supplier.

Again this is all a bit new, so with the caveat "as far as I know" only Talk Talk (who are an LLU supplier for both the line and broadband) are supplying or intending to supply the FTTC service and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

It is a reason to stay with BT if you would like it. Personally, I'd stay with BT as it gives you much more power to switch to cheaper call and/or broadband providers. The saving by switching the landline itself is not that great at only a few pounds per month which in my opinion is more than offset by the ability to use other call providers to make the cheapest calls possible.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
