computer freezing

Wonder if anyone can help me. My computer has been very slow, appears to be freezing all the time. Have run virus checker, spyware, adaware and defragged and clean up but no difference. Tried checking with malawarebytes too but didn't pick anything up. It's not just internet, can use Word very easily as the screen freezes all the time.
Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong? I use XP and it is about 3 years old.
thanks.

Could be a hardware fault too -- maybe HDD or graphics card/ might be worth backing up your data just in case /

To check if it's hardware, boot your PC in safe mode - tap F8 as it powers up until you get the options - and see if it appears to run OK. If it does, boot it normally, download and run HijackThis and post the log here. People are pretty good here at making recommendations based on that.

  • It sounds like you got some kind of virus or spyware. The best way solve the issues is do a full recovery using the hidden recovery partition. Normally you need to press F11 or F10 during boot up. Check during startup what keys you need to press.

If you do not have a recovery partition on your PC then you can do a fresh install.

I would power down the PC, and then open up the case, having pulled out the mains lead from the back of the system unit, and earthed yourself to the chassis, and do the following with care:
    • undo the clips at the end of each memory module, lift the module out, push it back firmly, and ensure the clips are fully home
    • unscrew any any add-in card, remove it, put it back, and screw it in again
    • check all internal plugs wherever they are located, and carefully ensure they are pushed tightly into their sockets
    Then start up again.
Go into Device Management (one way in is to type devmgmt.msc into the Run box) and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks before any item on the list. Deal with any you find (that's the short version!).

Look at the System Event Viewer Log (one way in is to type eventvwr into the Run box, then click on System), and see if there are any red Error indicators. Deal with any you find.

Burn the Microsoft Memory Diagnostics ISO to a CD (again that's the short version) and boot from that, and let it run for sufficiently long to make you happy that there's no memory error.

If all the above are clean, then you can be fairly certain that the problem probably isn't hardware-based...
