Loft Insulation Grant

Have just had a cold call from a surveyor from Mark Group (energy saving). He went up in loft and told me I am entitled to a government grant towards insulating the loft, and my contribution would be £199. I currently have no loft insulation. He seemed bona fide (I phoned his office before I let him in). Does anyone know about this scheme? £ 199 seems reasonable to me, anybody got any experience of this company, scheme??

Depends how big your loft is but you can insulate for much less that £199 if you fancy a diy job!
I bought
4 rolls of 100mm for £30 from homebase for between the joists
10 roles of 170mm space blanket for about £60 with the 15% discount voucher from B&Q
So I have reinsulated the loft up to the 270mm recomended level for £90
It is a nasty job though!0 -
Even if I do not go with this company, I am unable to do the work myself, so would have to pay someone to supply and fit the insulation. What would ball park figure for this be? 2 bed terraced house.0

I reckon £199 isn't that bad a price to be honest but you should always get several quotes. B&Q do it for £198 saving you £1

One of the main reasons I went for a self install is that the house is old and the joists are different widths apart! Rather than just stuffing standard width stuff between the joists I cut it to size. I took alot of time over it but think I did a neat job. Here is the first layer pic before the space blanket goes down http://i56.tinypic.com/1o613k.jpg0 -
I dont have access to a car, so would have to get someone to take me to get the stuff, then someone to show me what to do with it, or pay someone to do it. Would rather pay the £199 not to have the bother!!!!!0

If you have no loft insulation at all you will no doubt qualify for a grant from the Energy Saving Trust (andrew-b has supplied the link above). They will give you the contact details of local installers. If you have no insulation at all you do not have to be receiving benefits to qualify. Try it.
I was going to do this myself but unfortunately I had some insulation already so didn't qualify. Absolutely nothing had been done in the house for the last thirty-odd years - except they put in some grotty insulation which meant I had to pay full price to have new stuff laid on top. How typical.
Good luck.
