B&Q You can do it courses

Apologies if this has already been covered but I did look.

I recently did the "Changing a tap" course at my local B&Q. Costs £10 but they give you a £10 gift voucher and a 10% discount card afterwards. Took 3 hours and gave me enough knowledge to change my bath taps on my own and I would now be confident running new pipes and fixing leaks. Only took 3 hours and was very very good value. A friend's husband quoted me £50 to change the taps for me so, other than having to buy a tap spanner, I consider that money in my pocket.

Doing the "Tiling" course this saturday so I can finish my bathroom.

Will do the "Updating kitchen units" and "Fitting sliding wardrobe doors" some time next year.

Quite a few courses available but, so far, only 5 centres up in the UK are offering them. Maybe we should request some more...

I got most indignant when I saw the DIY courses for women our local one was doing. It was only about half a level up from "how to change a lightbulb for the ladies." I'm female, I'm blonde, if something's explained to me I can usually catch on pretty quickly - I don't need a course on how to change a lampshade!

I have taken your advice and booked on one on the 28th!

Despite what other posters say, I always welcome the chance for someone to give me some advice. I know in theory how to do things, but lack the confidence, so would really like some someone to help me believe that I know what I am doing.

Sounds like a really good idea to me - it's much easier to learn practical skills if you see someone doing it in person than from books - and it's always nice to be able to ask questions. And doing a quick couple of hours in the local DIY store is so much easier to schedule in than signing up for local authority classes or something like that. And the price sounds great!

I looked/was interested as I'd like to sort out some troublesome taps here (stiff/don't turn off - and often I go in and the hot tap's running fast as the last person's not given it the extra shove it needed). But they're only in a few places "located in Coatbridge, Gillingham, Meir Park, Swindon, Bolton and Trafford Park."

So it'd be cheaper for me to pay a plumber than get to any of those, nearest is 200 miles.

Never done a DIY course..haven't so much as spent a penny on a DIY book. Just learn as i go

Yes , done it that way , got the t-shirt .
BUT have made mistakes ( expected them ) and could live with them or correct them .
Did cost me some money , but against that my learning some DIY saved me thousands ( perhaps many thousands)

Having just bought a house - my husband is continually open-mouthed at the DIY stuff I know how to do. While he was watching Diagnosis Murder as a student, I was watching the home makeover daytime TV trash - didn't quite realise until now just how much I'd picked up from it all!

Mind you I'm a stubborn nowt who hates being beaten by anything - counts for a lot in the long run.
