Broken iphone but still in contract? Help!

Hi
Just wondered if anyone could help.

I have an iphone 3gs which I find invaluable. I have 6 months to go on my existing O2 contract and the phone is 18 months old.

My phone, just stopped working, no rhyme or reason, but said I needed to connect itunes and then restore. After going through the process it just comes up with error 1002, which from looking around on the web is a hardware failure.

I am booked in with a genius at the end of the week and hope to salvage something but my questions are:

Can the phone be mended - any tech people who may know?
Can get a replacement phone?
Can I upgrade to the new iphone
How do I stand with my remaining contract obligation.

Thanks for any time or help you can spare.

My OH recently bought a smart phone (not ipad) from Orange on a plan. He looked at and rejected several handsets in making his decision because the salesman said he could not in all honesty recommend them, as the shop had had to replace them for being faulty in the last few months. One of the handsets, he said one customer was on his third replacement in as many months. So assuming you are on a plan, I think you should get a replacement if it is not working.
  • I think you can get a replacement if you're on a contract. Have you spoken to O2 yet?

You may want to try a few times with the flashing .... I've 'broken' quite a few phones jailbreaking them and they eventually come back to life.

As above though, I would talk to O2 and then possibly Apple. Apple have good customer service in my experience.

  • I'd book an appointment with a Genius at an Apple Store.
If its a fault with the phone they will (did with me anyway) replace it there and then.
If you're out of warranty, it'll cost £140 ish

  • IIRC european rules mean electronic goods come with a mimum of 2 years warranty so if it is a hardware failure that you have not caused they'll have to fix it.
