No matter how much life knocks you down, it's your ability to get back up, brush yourself off and face your next set of challenges that makes you stronger0 -
I would seriously suggest that you do not introduce WOW. My husband is addicted to it, but won't admit this. He is losing his job in April (has nothing to go to and hasn't started looking or saving), he is on it every waking moment and comes to bed now at about 2am. He has totally withdrawn from family life - made more difficult as we have two young boys who want to spend time with Daddy. Our marriage is non existent - we are just people living in the same house. I don't know how much money he spends on this game, but I suspect it is more than he would admit to.
Games like this can wreck lives - speaking as one who knows. Happy New Year BTW!Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

Its a shame to hear that your husband has been sucked into WoW so deeply. I do know of others who play as much on it per week as they work their full time jobs. I can not see how that is entirely healthy!
I also play WoW however and find that it is relatively easy for me to play it for a few hours and then switch off. Agreed, if I have a long weekend from work (5 days off - whooopie) I might spend a lot of my first day playing WoW just to relax, but then might not play it for the rest of the weekend.
If you are looking to buy WoW for loved ones though, be aware that the cheapest that I have seen the monthly fees is £8 for 30 days (Amazon do 60 day cards for £15.99) which is cheaper than going direct via the games distributed Blizzard on a monthly basis. Also be aware that each expansion pack is just that, an expansion. The core game only allows access to about 2/3 of the content, the three expansion packs must be bought in order (Burning Crusade, Wrath of the lich King, Cataclysm) in order to be used.
Hope that helps.Signaller, author, father, carer.0 -

I echo your concerns here completely - my sister's boyfriend has no job, no desire to get a job and a serious addiction to WoW.
He wakes at around 12pm then plays on this solidly till 3am / 4am in the morning each and every day, he only moves form the computer for toilet breaks and I'm sure that if my sister didn't serve him his dinner at the computer desk he wouldn't eat. My 2 beautiful nieces have a loving mother who is fantastic with them but they have no concept of a father figure (even though he's only their step dad) as he is constantly on this game. In my own experiance I would never promote this game as I really believe that it can destroy lives.0 -
thier is a program on cable every so often called 'world of warcraft ruined my life'. these people have lost their houses through these types of games.
but they are no different from buying a game for the xbox/playstation where they can interact with other real players.
i do admit to to playing wow from when i used to get up until 3/4/5 am the next day, some times i hadnt been to sleep for roughly 48 hours, with Wow taking up a big chunk of my time and my son the other chunk (he was a baby when it was like that, i had depression and the social side kept me sane, and focused my mind on the tasks instead of sitting worried and furthering my depression) but their was also times where i wouldnt be on for a week or 2
The reason these games are a bit addictive is becasue u make friends, and you make arrangements to go do things together - same as in Real Life, but you stay at home and socialis instead of going out to the pub, spending loads of money compaired to the £8 a month (cheaper if u get the 3 or 6 month subscription)
(people would complain if their loved ones spent every night out at the pub, the gym, the pictures, coffee place, only difference here, is, it only costs £8 a month for this, the rest cost £8 for 1 part of the evening!)
My friends play Guild wars, but u have to use a lot of real money to advance, which i find strange, whereas wow u pay for tur expansions and thats the real money side done with, you dont have to pay to be a guild leader or add more players to your guild!
WoW do a 2 week trial, as its not for everyone (when i joined the trial, by the end of the 2 weeks i was dreaming of people with ? marks and ! marks above thier head and i had to tap them before they would talk to me lolLiving Simply, not simply living.Weight Loss - 5b/55lb

Hi All,
Yes WoW is highly addictive to some players - I was first "introduced" to this on Panorama a few weeks ago. It showed, quite rightly, the dangers of getting addicted and the costs involved: it's on a monthly subscription model and this can get very expensive.
But, as others on here have said, there are other games - online ones included - that are cheaper or even free.
* Lord of the Rings online is free - at least the initial levels are at any rate. I do expect this is the "sprat to cat a mackerel" scenario ie. hook them in with a freeby first
* Guildwars is somewhat similar to WoW I'm told, and much cheaper with "no subscriptions to pay" on the game pack when purchased - this may be true but I think for advancement (as with LotR online) money will pass hands at some point
*other free online games - see earlier postings
** lastly the free servers for WoW - see, for example
http://eternal-wow.com/
which I hope I have got right is a free server for WoW - but is legit, I'm not convinced these are?! - if someone knows otherwise or of other alternatives to WoW please advise us on here.
Those who have issues with loved ones, partners, spouses etc getting addicted to WoW or anything else please seek advise as soon as possible. First port of call that could help would be the NHS Choices site - see
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/addictions/Pages/Introduction.aspx
Thanks and a Happy New Year to all.
