PC games like World of Warcraft

I wanted to get a fantasy style PC game for my nephew for Christmas like World of Warcraft (I saw it featured on Panorama and thought it looked great) , but then discovered this requires a monthly subscription - which neither he nor I can afford.

Does anyone know of other PC games I could buy that would suit but not cost a fortune in subscription payments?

there are free servers for world of warcraft

there is also the lord of the rings game(its a bit like world of warcraft) that is free you just need to download the software bearing in mind its may take a few hours depending on net speed (search google for the link)

If you are after an online game then Lord of the Rings is now free to play, also Everquest 2 is quite good. If you just wanted a fantasy pc game then Oblivion is really good - and massive so will keep them occupied for a while.

I played wow for a long time and there are free servers but they are privately run ones. They are a little tricky to get onto if you aren't computer savvy and often have differences to the official game. They also don't tend to have official game support if you have any problems. Am not saying don't try it but if you do want to go down that route then just be aware of the issues before shelling out for the game x

    Hi All,

Many thanks for the replies - very interesting.

WoW alternative free servers - how do I get started with these?

Do I need a copy of the boxed game to play on free servers or (like Lord of the Rings online - another excellent suggestion I was unaware of, thanks) is it a download etc.

Any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again, Roy
btw. Happy New Year to everyone here !

My kids are into League of Legends

    http://www.leagueoflegends.com/playnow?redirect=http://www.leagueoflegends.com/

It is not quite the same as World of Warcraft.

But free to play ,although like most of these games you can pay for stuff ,though they say paid for stuff will not give you an advantage in play.

  • out of all of these types of games i would go for guild wars myself, no extra charges once game has been bought (unless you want to buy extra outfits etc BUT not compulsory.)
due to spilling coffee :coffee: on my keyboard it works when it wants to :rotfl:

I would go for a standard role-playing game, which your nephew could choose to subscribe to online after recieving.

Loads to be had on Amazon.
