Hi,

my son has the older xbox 360 without wireless built in he would like to be able to go online for Christmas,

he has used my vision box to do this with the cables but his console is now in his bedroom hence my search for a wireless key.

Basically my problem is that I have seen a new xbox key for £40 but when I went in our local game shop there's was £60,

tried to ask the retailer which one but he seemed insistant that because of g/n !!!! I need the more expensive one, I felt pressured as he told me there selling fast, I managed to walk away albeit feeling guilty as I'll feel awful if they do all sell out, but the money saving bit of me thinks £20 is a big saving.

This post is long and I'm very sorry but I'm just really confused about g/n stuff what do I need to look for on the pack,

thankyou so much for Reading and advice

Kerry

You basically need a network in your son's bedroom.

    Options:
1-a very long ethernet cable (£5 tops on ebay)
    2-homeplugs network extender
3-an old wireless router you have that can be setup in wireless 'bridge' mode (basically acts in reverse to take your wireless internet and convert it back to a wired socket he can plug his cable into)
4-the xbox specific thingy (the cheap one)

I'd go with JasX idea, either homeplugs or a Wireless Access Point (or a router you can install DD-WRT onto to turn into a access point, does require some knowhow though) or the Xbox plug and play adaptor...

Also it seems Game isn't the cheapest place for them shop around. PcWorld/Currys do the Microsoft Wireless N one for £44.97 (.97 does mean its clearance so check online)
Go onto the Pcworld or Currys site and search for 608415 as the SKU.

Edit. Did some more searching, seems like Pcworld/Currys/Dixons is just about the cheapest, Amazon is doing it for £2 less and that seems to just be the older G style.

I would personally go for two homeplugs, far more reliable. PC World normally have a couple for £40 or so.

I have had 2 xboxes connected to various home hubs inc the latest one using the older wireless adaptor for xbox. Plug it in configure with xbox and go

I have had problems in the past with strict nat - not sure if an ethernet cable would help. I just went back to my white 1.5 hub

Good evening thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

I'm actually now tempted to measure up for a very long Ethernet cable as at least if ds plays up I can unplug him haha

but the trailing wire hater in me is very grateful for the links to the plug and play key thingy :)

either way the man in the shop won't be getting £60 of me. Let's hope I'm not back here Christmas day begging for tips on how to set it all up, you all seem so very knowledgeable and i really appreciate the help.

well other means to the same end:

-work out how to loginto your BT vision thing and then either shutdown the wireless network or change the wireless password temporarily to throw him off.

-if you go the homeplug route you could disconnect / power down the one the lounge end

-if you really want to be geeky you could see if your router supports MAC address fiiltering and work out how to do that but that'd be much more fiddly for marginal benefit. (need to setup every device/new device manually but then it would be easier to throw him off without affecting other wireless devices. Wired devices and the BT vision thing itself are unaffected either way)
