Problems with Printer Install

Okay being a moneysaver I won a printer off eBay for £3 picked it up and a week later still can't get the thing to install.
These are the details:
Printer: Lexmark Z51
OS: Windows XP
All memory etc and my PC are fine (sorry if this is vague please ask if more details needed about my pc)
Now I set it all up and installed the software disk and all seemed well then I tried to print an alignment page and the printer started to make lots of noise so i unplugged it.
After that I thought the cartridges may be loose so opened it up to see that they don't come to the middle for changing upon opening the lid...odd.
So I thought I would try again only to get a Subapp Print Spooler error (or something similar). So I uninstall everything and go onto lexmark support download the firmware for XP and the drivers and still having a problem when I try ti add a printer it says that 'Operation could not be completed. Print Spooler Service Not Running.'
It seems to be a known problem with Z51's and XP but I just can't for the life of me get it to work I have tried a few other things but none of those have worked. I also find that the cartridges move around inside the printer every 20 seconds or so when it is switched on, whats that all about?
Also I have it connected via a parallel port would using a USB make any difference?
Should I give up and just go buy a new printer?

I would definitely have set it up via usb. Uninstall the drivers you have put on, reboot the machine and then put the driver disk in and follow the set up from there. Dont plug in the printer until it tells you to do so. Worth a try before you skip it
I have nothing better to do!!!!

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
Yeah tried that as well and still it turn itself off or I got an error about the RCP and when I tried to turn that on I got the same error message.
Anyway got a solution on MS website, did a sys restore, started in safe mode and got rid of a few registry files.
And hey presto, it worked. But guess what? The printer is knackered. I think I am doomed with printers this is the 2nd one thats not worked for me
Complaint to seller sent.
I know it was only £2.99 but i spend £5 in bus fares and almost 2 hours in traffic meeting the guy to pick it up.
