Visiting Auschwitz: advice please?

i have been reading the thread below but i would like some specific advice reagrding visiting Auschwitz

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=278974&highlight=auschwitz

I have been thinking about visiting Auschwitz for a few years now but I have never got round to it. But I am determined to do it before the end of the year. I know it will be cold out there in November/December time, but in my opinion that will add to the trip.

Ideally I would like to fly out on Friday and come back on the Sunday, although this is a short trip I intend to visit Auschwitz II-Birkenau and Auschwitz on the Saturday and use the trip as a taster for Krakow.

Having travelled around a bit, I have no problems staying in hostels and roughing it for a few days (I quite enjoy it really).

Can anyone give me a bit of advice that will help me plan my trip?

You need a full day for the Auschwitz sites. The cheapest way to get there is on a bus that leaves regularly from the main bus station. You can also take a train which is quicker but leaves less often. Make sure you do Auschwitz I and II.

I'm so jealous. I love breaks like that instead of sitting round a pool. Hope you have a great time.

I've been there twice, Winter and Summer, and Winters really the better time to go. Apart from anything else there are less tourists there then. Bring plenty of tissues with you - it really is a sobering experience.

Definitely. Me and DH walked round in complete silence.

We went in winter - snow was everywhere and there could only have been about 20 people there walking round. Much nicer (if that's the right word).

I was very dubious about going - I still haven't decided if it was right for me (we went about 2 years ago).

The images will stay with me forever...
  • there are two compamies offering bus tours to auschwitz one is called the point and the other is krakow tours. the point can be booked online at a discount.i think that is the best way of visiting .they pick you up from your hotel and take you to both camps and return you to your hotel i think the cost was about £17 each

When i visited Krakow i used the bus to get to Auschwitz and it wasn't bad at all, it's just a regular local bus rather than a tourist bus.

Myself and hubby are thinking about going to Krakow in March/April and were wanting to visit Auschwitz and the salt mines.
Thanks for all this valuable info and the tours that Scallaga mentions seem very good value.
