Visa Debit Card Signature

Hi, I signed my signature on the bank of my debit card and i accidentally smudged it :( now there is just a grey blur that can't be removed.

Is it ok if i just sign over that? or is the card invalid now?

Thanks.

It's probably not actually invalid - for use as a chip and PIN device and online - but where the signature is actually needed an alert retailer should refuse it, whether as it is or signed again.

If the card isn't signed/unreadable they may ask if u have something else with your signature like a driving license or passport. That's what I've found when I forget to sign cards.

Retailers or banks may refuse to accept it should they ever have to check the signature.
Call your bank up and tell them the card is damaged.

If you qualify for one then it is always better to use a credit card for online trqnsactions.
If the card is hacked they use the bank's money not yours!

Slightly off topic but earlier today I purchsed some Frontline Dog Flea treatment from Rowlands Chemist, handed over my Lloyds TSB Visa Debit card to the assistant. The pin pad was not on the counter, she took the card away and returned with a receipt and handed over the goods. When I asked 'don't I have to enter my pin' she said 'it went through' but what she did was swipe it instead, the receipt said verified by signature.

I pointed this out and she originally made up some story about lower transactions not needing a pin now. I am aware of the contactless sytems being introduced for sales of less than £10 but my card does not even have this feature and it wasn't a particularly low transaction anyway, it was about £25. then she said 'just sign the receipt then', the signature is barely visible on my card either!.

    Quite scary really.

Have you tried using credit/debit cards abroad? Many still don't use the electronic pin verification, so you have to sign. It is a universal practice to give you the card and copy receipt back before giving you the receipt to sign. So signatures are never checked.
