system restore

Guys

Can anyone point me in the right direction please

I want to create a system restore point every 24hrs.

I can see how to create one NOW and I saw a help page that said you can create one every 24hrs of real time or every 24hr of the computer being on but I can’t see where to make the choice

Looking at the restore points mine seems to be only creating one every time I install something

Cheers

    This should help you LINK
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
  • Copy and paste the following code to Notepad and save it as CreateSystemRestorePoint.vbs:
'Creates a System Restore Point for Windows XP.
    rp = "Manual Restore Point by " & WScript.ScriptName
    GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\default:Systemrestore").CreateRestorePoint rp, 0, 100

Double-click the file to run it and create a restore point. You could run it as a scheduled task to automate the process.

For something a bit more sophisticated see How to automatically create a System Restore point upon the first boot up of the day.
  • The help page I’m referring to says…..

“System Restore creates restore points on a regular basis even if you have not made any changes to the system. System Restore automatically creates these restore points:
    • every 24 hours of calendar time
    or
    • every 24 hours your computer is turned on

If your computer is turned off for more than 24 hours, System Restore creates a restore point the next time you start the computer. The computer must be idle for a few minutes before System Restore creates a scheduled restore point.
Selecting a scheduled restore point restores Windows XP Professional and programs to the state they were in at that time. Any files with data file name extensions (such as .doc, .htm, .xls, etc.) and all files in the My Documents folder are not restored.”

To me this suggests that XP will do it automatically without using any 3rd party vbs scripts

    Any thoughts?
  • My laptop absolutely refuses to set system restore points.

The box in the System Restore tab is unchecked, but there is no daily one and it refuses to set one every time software is installed. I have to periodically set a manual one.
  • headcovers, the links in the posts above might help you as they detail the reg entries you need to check to get restore to work

Mine works apart from the 24hr thing
  • FWIW, my 2 computers don't create automatic restore points either.

See System Restore not creating automatic System Checkpoints on my machine.

Odd, isn't it! My downstairs PC creates one at least every day, and the recent record is seven in a day, although that might partially be as a result of Spybot setting a restore point before deleting a tracking cookie.

A very good Windows GUI program, and a VBS Script, for creating a System Restore Point is from Doug Knox. look under the XP Tips, XP Fixes and Xp Utilities for "Single-Click System Restore Point". I've used the v1.1 utility for ages, ever since Doug modified the original 1.0 at my request! Both of these can be scheduled, I believe...

Thanks for that one but i come back to the point that as 24hr points are mentioned in XP help then i shouldn't need to use 3rd party script, it must be in XP somewhere

Did you check Chippy_Minton's link about the Task Scheduler service perhaps being stopped?

Otherwise, surely a scheduled script/program is better than nothing, however much "XP ought to do it"!

Here's a possible alternative, found on a (reputable) newsletter:

    How to Reinstall System Restore

The System Restore feature in Windows XP is a great one - but sometimes it quits working properly (or at all). In this case, you may need to reinstall it. Here's how:
    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. In the Run box, type %Windir%\INF. This should open your WINDOWS directory to the INF folder.
    3. Find a file named SR.INF (if you have Explorer configured to hide common file extensions, it may display as SR).
    4. Right click the SR.INF file and select Install. Windows may prompt you for your Windows installation source path. If you have service packs installed, point it to the %Windir%\ServicePackFiles folder.
After the System Restore files are reinstalled, restart Windows.
Important note: this process will remove any existing system restore points.

Please note that I am simply quoting; I haven't ever needed to do this
