AVI to MPEG2

Hello I’m just after a bit of advice please, I have a TV that accepts sd cards for viewing photos and movies but the movies will only play in mpeg2 format, and most of the films I have are in avi format. I have searched Google for a converter both free and paid for but there are so many and all have good and bad reviews, I just thought I would post this message to see if anyone has used any such program and could give me an honest review and what the program is. My main requirement is the quality output as it will be played on a 42" TV speed of program not a problem long as quality is good. So any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

formatfactory will be the best easy way and it's free.

ps the quality will only ever be as good as the file going in so crappy avi = crappy MPEG2, formatfactory will keep the exact ratio and pixel size as the original file.

    Hi
Just to add to what's already been said.
You're probably not going to get very good quality if you convert an AVI file to MPEG-2 and view it on a large screen - unless your AVI is a very high quality video that you've made yourself.

There are many converter programs to choose from.
The one that I use is WinFF.

    From here:- http://winff.org/html_new/

    The pre-sets to use are:-

    Convert To...
    DVD

    Device Preset
    PAL DVD HQ Fullscreen
    or
    PAL DVD HQ Widescreen

These will create an mpg file with MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio.

Final option if you want a heap more control (at the price of simplicity) is SUPER from eRightSoft - free and powerful, does some conversions I can't do with my $600 Sorenson Squeeze!
