Faulty land line - Does everyone charge for diversion?

We have an on-going fault on our Plusnet landline that has caused our home phone to be unusable for 3 months.

Is there a company out there who would not charge for diversion of calls to a mobile until the landline fault is fixed? (i.e. the cost of diverting and the cost of the call to the mobile). We are getting nowhere with the repair (review dates pass with no progress update and no-one takes ownership of the problem). Were considering changing to BT, to get closer to Openreach to fix the problem, but the forums don't give much hope for this being a faster solution.

The cheapest way I can think of to forward a landline number is to get a VoIP incoming landline number with SIPGate or similar and forward it to that - not free but at least you're only paying for forwarding to a landline. Then you have a few options:
    • If your mobile phone is capable of working with SIP (e.g. there's a few Android apps for this) and your provider allows VoIP calls (or you have wifi at home), you could use your mobile
    • Get a SIP application for your PC and a microphone or headset for your PC
    • Buy a SIP phone or SIP adapter that connects to your internet router
    • Get SIPGate to take a voicemail and email it to you
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

If you really want to receive the calls on your mobile, and you're with O2, and you don't mind spending about £11 per month, the following might just work (although I haven't tried it):

Sign up to http://www.o2.co.uk/internationalfavourites and obtain a "Call Me" number in a country like Canada or the USA.
Get an incoming UK number from Localphone.com (instead of SIPGate). Set up Localphone to forward calls to your "Call Me" number.
Get calls to your landline forwarded to the Localphone number

All rather convoluted, but should be cheaper if you are forwarding a lot of calls...

  • Thanks for the ideas. Sadly the only network that has coverage around here is Vodafone so won't be eble to try the O2 idea.

Hadn't thought of using VOIP, so will investigate SIP.

I was really hoping to find a 'simple' temporary landline to mobile solution (although idealy I just want my Landline back ).
  • Changing to BT probably won't help. Writing a firm letter to Plusnet (or email) stating how long the problem has persisted for, the problems you have been caused, and the date by which you expect service to be fully restored otherwise you will examine what legal means are available to you because of their breach of contract, might bring a result.
