What can I do about persistent SPAM from La Redoute?

Hi all.

I continue to receive emails from La Redoute despite unsubscribing from their mailing list several times (I've kept the latest unsubscription confirmation email from them).

Is there anything a little more official I can do?

Thank you so much.

That's not really the point though for me. They're in the UK and I thought they weren't legally allowed to do this once I'd unsubscribed? I want to deal with the issue, not fix it temporarily.

Report them to the Information Commissioner http://www.ico.gov.uk/. There should be an online form to fill in and you need to attach evidence as well. They may take a while to respond but they're the government organisation responsible for taking action against spammers as far as I know. I feel your frustration.

There are currently many exceptions to the rules on email mailing lists which in theory should be stopping before too long so that we have the "full" rules coming into force but to date there has been no date given for these to be removed - for example, if you are a customer of La Route then they can basically send you as much email as they want, if you have never been a customer of theirs then they cant.

That's not strictly true - I work for an organisation that regularly sends emails out to its customers. At the bottom of every one we have to offer customers the option to unsubscribe from future communications

We have a legal/compliant obligation to remove those customer from all future messages. Existing customers should be no different to non-customers

I'd send a complaint letter/email to their customer services team, and if you don't hear anything back, contact the Information Commissioner
  • Have you e-mailed the company telling them they have breached data protection rules - ie maintaining accurate proportionate records - Take a name of a person and tell them that you will report them to the information commissioners.

This has worked for me with several credit card companies who refuse to listen. The name is important because the majority of people will help you out if they think they will be blamed.

Strictly not true at present - this is the law as passed by the EU in the full however in the UK there are currently 3 expections to the law put in as temporary measures but at present there is no expiry date for them.

The regulations require that companies and organisations have prior consent to send unsolicited marketing material by electronic mail to individual subscribers, except in the context of a clearly defined customer relationship. If you are an individual subscriber and you are receiving unsolicited marketing by electronic means you can complete a complaint form.

It sounds like your company is following best practice and what the law ultimately will read. At present if you are a customer then the company does not need your prior consent to start contacting you nor an unsubscribe facility.
