Company has gone bankrupt and not paid employers tax

Help for my friend appreciated. The small business he was working for has gone bust so he is now out of a job. He now realises that his employer, who has been providing payslips showing all relevant deductions had actually not been paying this tax to HMRC for the best part of the last 12 months.
Can anyone tell me, can the taxman chase my friend for this money (region of about 5k!) or would the company that has just gone bust be held responsible?

Your friend won't be chased for the unpaid tax or NI if the company was collecting tax under PAYE.0

No, the taxman can't.0

Thank you, I shall pass that on.0
