I had a varnished pine tongue and groove ceiling in my kitchen, I washed it down with a mixture of hot water bleach and washing-up liquid, I did NOT use sanding paper, I just painted over it with white one coat gloss, but did put on 2 coats. It looks better and was easier than trying to take down the tongue and groove.
You should be OK with emulsion you might need 2 or 3 coats.0 -
thanks for letting me know i will give it a go:)0

depending on the colour you're going for you might want to use a coat of sealant. You can get a 3-in-1 primer, sealant and undercoat that should stop the yellowed varnish colour coming through the paint.
also, kitchen/bathroom emulsion tends to cover and grip better than regular emulsion (and shouldn't cost much more).0 -
lillybeth,if the job hasnt been started it is best to rub the varnish down with wet and dry, block or paper .(its the black sandpaper and you use it wet so it dosent clog up or cause dust). This will give the paint you use a key and thus will not be prone to peeling off.
Emulsion is much more hard wearing than it used to be, we tarted up a bathroom door, for "visitors" and it is still good years later.

I've successfully painted over varnish on numerous occassions.
The key is to sand very well before doing so.0 -
I hate sanding though with a vengeance0
