Windows updates upsetting laptop

I have had a few days of grief with my daughters laptop (Lenovo 3000 N200... running Vista Home premium.
Started with her spilling some water on it a couple of weeks back - resulted in a new key board being installed by local PC repair shop.
Worked ok for 2 weeks.
Then we started getting problems.... She is not sure when but battery stopped charging. May have been from initial problem but would have thought the shop would have jumped on that if they had seen it? It may not be relevant??
Problems started when Windows updated and the laptop would not restart.. stuck in a config loop. Config never got past 0%, shut down and restart.... config 0% and so on.. carried on for hours.
Rescued her Files by copying C drive to remote hard drive.
Reset hard drive to factory settings using Lenovo rescue and recovery... All started and worked fine. Microsoft Office didnt instal tho.
Windows updates took over the machine.. Service pack 1 and lots of others loaded fine. Service pack 2 tried installing this morning. Now laptop will not start... does not get to Microsoft start up screen?? Pressing the Lenovo button to get to Rescue and Recovery is not working either??
Where have i gone wrong?? Is the battery problem a red herring... mains supply is ok. Is it time to give in and give it to a man who nows....
Any help welcomed... running out of hair to pull out!:mad::mad::mad:

On advice I have just disconnected the battery and.... it has started and is installing the service pack????
Confused dot com! Possibly a battery fault is draining the power / voltage and it shuts the pc down??
Wondering now if this was in fact the initial fault and I have been wasting my time here.....!:mad:I save so I can spend.0 -
even if battery is gone you should be able to run on mains...as you cant do it i think it may be a hardware problem...electronics and water dont go well togather, as i am sure you would know....while its unsual for problem to occur some time after the incident it's not impossible...
you said u couldnt install windows office? do you know the error message you were getting?0 -
I have run it on mains... but with the battery connected it starts to wind up then crashes... Take battery out and it runs ok.
have downloaded all the windows updates ok now.
Will check our MS office issueI save so I can spend.0
