British Gas Dirty Trick

I received a letter from British Gas (just electricity, I have no gas supply) urging me to sign up for "Energy Smart" and tempting me by claiming that I might make £150/year savings. When I started to sign up on their web site, I was advised that I would need to change tariffs. When I looked into the detail, I found that my current tariff was £148/year cheaper than the one that they wanted me to switch to. In addition there was a £40 switching penalty that they could apply. It struck me that anyone less vigilant would be taken in by their information and be tempted to switch. I am disgusted vwith British Gas and will now be looking to switch as soon as it is economically sensible.

Two of the other BIG6 have recently written to customers who's tariff deals were about end, advising them of this and offering a 'Wonderful' new tariff, which on close examination wasn't even the best tariff from that supplier, let alone the market - God help those who just accept what thier trusted Multi-millon £ suppler tells them

I also found this with british gas although I am going back a few years, I was always on the standard rate for electricity, until I discovered I could have been on a cheaper rate. When calling to discuss this with BG I asked why was I never informed of this cheaper rate, the guys answer was "well its always been there !!!"
