You need to buy before the shares ex-dividend date to receive the dividend. There's usually a delay between a share going ex-dividend and receiving the monies.

So long as you hold the share across it going ex-dividend, you receive the monies (this is not normally the case for options).

    Ahh cheers, that answers that!

Bear in mind, Graham, that the share price "usually" drops by the value of the dividend on the ex-div date - because any buyers after that date don't get the divvie. Hence, if you're investing for growth the divvie often isn't really part of that growth and you have to wait for the growth to catch back up again. It's rare to be able to buy just before ex-div, sell just after and make much/any gain.

Wasn't really thinking along those lines. This was for my more long term shares. Was just making sure I knew where I stood in terms of expecting a dividend.

    But thanks, useful info!

Got the full 1k invested now anyway, and so far, £55 down. Not too bad considering fees and stuff :)

Not a criticism Graham, merely an observation, your posts seem quite bearish yet this seems more of a bull action rather than bear IMO.

I held out too long on BPC, was hoping they would fall to 10p, i'm such a noob at this share game.

Not only that but the gold miner I was tracking have two RNS' this afternoon showing blackrock funds investing in them. I suspect that tomorrow they will open higher as well and I may have missed the bottom price on this share too.

I'm not optimistic about housing. See that falling. Neither am I optimistic about the economy.

But instead of sitting on my butt watching my savings "grow" at a stupid rate, I'm trying to do something about it.

Not sure you have to be optiistic about every single part of the economy to invest in shares?

Let's put it this way, I aint got no housing, or bank shares.

You probably shouldn't be investing in equities then.

KEA and ACU are a couple worth a look at.

Shareprice gives you a good bit of info and x-o is £5.95 per trade.

Do you have a share scheme at work? Ours is impossible to lose on, yet one person took £9k out 2 years back from a £700 investment.

We have one where the company gives you 2 free shares for each one you buy. Maximum investment is £125 per month (from gross pay, HMRC limits) with dividends automatically reinvested. If you keep the shares for 5 years (3 for dividends) they are tax and NI free. Been in coming up to 8 years.
