hiya, i know nothing about cars and don't want to be taken for a ride so. I have a 2001 VW Polo and it had a flat battery about 3 weeks ago. I got the recovery people out who jumped it for me, i then used the ar that day and evening, next time i went to use the car, a few days later, it was flat again, then it started snowing so i knew i wouldn't be driving. So now i need to get it to a garage and get a new battery fitted.

Questions, anyone know who are good value and how much i might be looking at for the battery and how muh is a decent price for fitting.

VW are saying 2 choices of battery, Vartar at £44.61 or Quantum at £29.13 and then £25 for fitting is this good?

BEEN TOLD IT MIGHT BE THE ALTERNATOR HOW MUCH SHOULD THAT BE?

    http://www.kwik-fit.com/batteries.asp

Get a quote off Kwik Fit, my girlfriend has a '98 VW Polo and always found them to be the cheapest for anything she needed doing to it. I'm not sure on prices of batteries though.

No its not good, fitting would take 5 minutes, Halfords will fit a new battery for £5 if you don't have some one that can do it for you.

What you need to consider is the radio may need a code entering after the battery is disconnected for it to work.

Don't touch crap fit with a 10ft barge pole......
They'll con you into all sort of work you do not need!!

Halfrauds will charge nearly twice as much for a battery of half the quality.

I got my battery from these folks http://www.tayna.co.uk/

Charging £25 to change a battery is taking the yellow liquid, I'd order one and fit it myself OR find a friend who can do it OR pay a local garage £5 or so to do it.

Just buy the battery at VW and fit it yourself, ( or a friend ) sorted.

The price without the fitting charge is very good.

I've been in touch with a local garage and they are going to take a look at it for free for me. Their service has been good in the past so i think i'll take it to them. Thanks for the replies, i thought the battery price wa ok, but thought that £25 was a lot for fitting!

An alternator will be £100+ plus fitting.

Unless you know the battery is fairly new (less than 5 years old) I would get the new battery and see how you go.

Unless this is ANOTHER case of short journeys with the heater, lights, heated screen, etc on
In which case there's nothing wrong with the car, only the way it's being used.
