Ottoman Leather Bedstead with Latex Mattress?

  • Thanks Tim, yes i've realised they're charging too much for the Rhodes mattress and i don't think we need that heavy mattress as we both weigh around 110KG. So i think anything b/w 1000 to 1400 pocket sprung would be enough for us but i really like the latex.

Now I've set my budget up to 700gbp, and focusing on Hyder ottoman bedstead and Rest Assured Latex mattress. Will start looking online for the best deals on these too.

Question: Do i have to make sure that the mattress i buy is specific for bedstead as what i found that divan mattress can't go on bedstead.

    Many Thanks

I really don't think that anyone takes any notice of "half-price" sales nowadays.

Believe me they do. Otherwise why would people shop from a store that sells at double the price they should do? It's called advertising. If each time you watch a program on ITV you get an advert saying that Dreams have a better than half price sale, then when one day you want to buy a bed, who do you think you are going to think of first?

I'm sure that Dreams have problems with their customer service as do a lot of companies but at least they have a customer service department which you can't guarantee for on-line discount retailers.

The difference is that Dreams have a department to deal with customer issues, because they are a big company and have so many to deal with. But most of the people in that department won't have the authority to make any decisions. And then when you ask to speak to someone who can make a decision they are never available (this is the same thing you will hear in most call centres, because that's what they are trained to say).

With a small company they may not have a department to deal with customer issues, because they should only get very few. So the chances are that even if you aren't speaking to the managing director, then they probably would be within easy reach if needed. You don't get the managing director of dreams on the phone do you?

As far as the ottoman beds go, Hyder are a good brand. However did you know that Rest Assured are part of the Silentnight group?. Just do a search for them in the MSE forums.

Also did you realise that the 'Innergetic Latex' used by the SN group isn't pure, it is a blend? Also that they only use a thin layer of it, and then bulk it out with cheap, hot , and sweaty reflex foam. Also when they use fancy words like 'zonal support' this often means that it doesn't actually cover the whole sleeping surface, but it only covers a small area in the middle. What is ideal is a full 2" deep layer of natural latex on both sides of the mattress.

The Rhodes is also non turn, and so won't last anywhere near as long as a two sided mattress that can be turned.

I would say that the Rhodes is actually worth less than half the price that Dreams are charging for it. They keep the prices artificially high because they are the only people to sell this model. Personally I wouldn't pay £100 for any mattress from the SN group.

If I were you I would stay well away from big brand names for mattresses.

As far as being suitable for the ottoman bed goes. Most pocket sprung mattresses aren't suitable for slatted bases (despite what the retailers may tell you). This is because the springs all work independently, and try to push down between the slats, which can damage them. There are two ways around this. You can either lay a sheet of pegboard over the slats to spread the weight out, or you can get a mattress with the latex on both sides so that the latex on the bottom spreads the weight out over the slats.
  • A quick search has revealed La ROMANTICA Monaco double sided latex, and its looking good too, is that something i should look for?

I think Ottomon bed has got curved sprung slats , i don't think pegboard will sit on it. So double sided latex is the only solution?

I would personally advise you not buy a mattress online without trying it first. How do you send a mattress back if you don't like it? Many online mattress sellers do not abide by Distance Selling Regulations so think carefully before you buy such products online - especially when they have only a 12 month guarantee!

Yes - and with a small company you may have only one person to deal with who has overall authority but what do you do when that one person decides they don't want to help you?

Large companies are also more likely to back down when they know they are in the wrong.

    DYOR

Some product specifications are recommended here along with guidance on guarantees. When you follow that guidance you are led to very few companies to purchase from. For example how many online sellers allow you to sleep on a mattress and return it if not happy and also sell a two sided pocket sprun memory foam mattress? Take a look and please report back on how many you find...

I totally agree with all of your points. When i started searching about bed/mattress i thought the only way to get them are dreams and others big chains but after searching and with the help of this forum i've narrowed down the choices to few brands models whthin my budget just like i do for electronic items where i go the stores like currys/comet to see the item by myself and then i order it online.

Like for bed i've selected Hyder Bali but i still have to finalize the model for the mattress, once i know that i'll try to locate them near me so that i can go there and see it by myself then i'll get the cheapest online deal. I do understand in this way i'll have very limited choices but all i need is one mattress.
  • Guys finally i've short listed following price wise they're are almost same, could you advise which one to choose:

Joseph Ottoman Bed or Hyder Bali
Joseph Solar Latex Spring Mattress or La Romantica Florence Mattress

p.s. does some one has any experience with bedkingdom?
