hi there,

recently i got married, about 1 month before the wedding i put in for a married quater , i put in the app as soon as we decided to move our wedding foreward so our family could be together.

we put down our required move in date on the application, after the 15 working day period i phoned up DE housing and was given a provisional offer of a quater. i still have not recieved the letter of this offer almost 3 weeks later probably due to the recent bad weather. but they were not able to give us a move in date as the house is still in use. this proves a bit of a problem since our children already have places in the local schools which they are due to start after christmas but now it turns out the quater will not be ready till probably mid feb at the earliest.

now the offer they gave me does not meet with my required quater move in date. i did not formally accept DE's provisional offer either in writing or on the phone with them. DE say they have 4 months to provide us with housing, but i cannot find any time tables for haveing to be givin a quater on any JSP that i have access to on the army intranet or the big internet.

has anyone came across this situaton before where DE say they have no quaters to give out? or have any advice on this 4 month rule for providing housing? or what i can try next?

i have been looking for short term housing in the local area but trying to find only a 2 month let is next to impossible unless you are willing to pay £200 ish per week :(

does any one know can or has DE housing able to provide short term quaters untill your's is ready i.e we have been offered a four bedroom quater due to children but would be happy to be in a smaller one untill ours is ready to occupy.?

  • If they can't meet your required move-in date with a quarter, surely you should be entitled to a hiring? Ring DE and make a fuss!
  • ssfa ? yeah you need to moan like a !!!!! to get anything done before people !!!!!! off for xmas and forget about it.
  • For SSFA you will need to request a Non Availability Certificate (NAC). I'm sure as soon as you start requesting this from DE which is mentioned in JSP 464 Part 1 Chapter 5 things will move along a lot faster, there is no mention of 4 months waiting times so this would be your best bet.

It does state however personnel are to take over and move into SFA within 14 days of their required date

They don't have to process your application until 4 mths before your required date for a qtr. Once its 4 mths or less until you require your qtr they should aim to process your application within 15 days. It doesn't mean they have 4 mths to house you after your required move in date. I think (but i'm not sure) they can offer you a property that will be available 4 wks either side of your required date.

I would ring them and ask if there are any other properties that will be available for you in time. I'm not sure if you can apply for NAC as there is a house available thats been allocated, its just been delayed. If you can apply for NAC and SSFA you may well find they have to source you a house and with christmas, new year and various leave coming up it may be not be much quicker than you waiting for the property thats already been allocated.

I know at one point once you moved into a Qtr you couldn't apply for a move until you had lived there for 6 mths. Also once in a property you may find people moving into the area get priority over you.

This will be useful to you:

We had a similar situation. Myself and my two children ended up staying with my mum while housing was sorted out. Hubby went into work one day and his boss asked him how I was liking the quarter, my hubby explained that HIC said there were no houses available. His boss got on the phone to the HIC and a couple of hours later we had a quarter. Perhaps you could ask your boss if he wouldn't mind giving them a call? Good luck
