E-on Standard Rate with an E7 Meter

Any ideas??

My in-laws changed dual fuel supplier to E-on last year and during the call stated that they wanted to move away from E7 to a standard rate.

All seemed well, the call agent stated that it could be done without a meter change as they could 'just add the units together' which seems a simple idea. They don't have electric heating and no switching takes place from the supply side it all runs through the same meter.

However they have just received the bill for the last 6 months to find it is over £600 and it is still being supplied as an E7 supply. A call to E-on today was useless, they stated that a meter change was required and would be charged for.

However I know that Central Networks are wanting to change the meter anyway (due to age not supply change) so could this been done at the same time FOC? And can the bill they have received be back calculated as agreed in the first place? Ideas please?

  • A meter change definitely isn't require. E.ON are one of the suppliers who can bill a single rate tariff on an E7 meter. You need to call back and speak to someone who knows what they're talking about.

    If your in-laws requested to be on a single rate tariff from the start of the account then put a complaint in writing requesting that they are back dated on to the correct tariff.

    stewie_griffin is correct, E.ON can bill an economy 7 meter on a one rate tariff, as your in-laws requested this at the start there should be some notes on the account to back this up.

    I would also advise them to get back in contact with E.ON and advise that this is what they requested and discuss the account being re-calculated.

    Also, just check that all of the meter readings are accurate and not estimated.

    I am seeing them this afternoon anyway so will get them to contact you. The reading are correct as the meter was read on 1st December and the bill produced, it's just this issue of the two rates being charged instead of one. They use less that 20% of electric at night rates, to give you a clue the direct debit is £145 per month. I nearly died when she told me!

    Are you saying they already pay £145 per month and have been asked for an additional £600 to cover the last 6 months usage? :eek:

    Even if not, £100 per month for a property not heated by electricity (or not heated at all presumably for some of the last 6 months!) is very high. Perhaps have a chat your energy supplier to see how you could save electricity.

    Whilst E.On should recalculate the bill for you based on the tariff you requested earlier, don't expect much of a difference in overall cost. There will probably be a slight saving based on single rate, but don't expect it to be too significant.

    Were the opening readings on the first bill correct after your in-laws changed supplier to Eon?
    Were they proper readings rather than estimates?

    If the starting readings were too low this may well explain the large bill and extremely large DD payments.

    I would strongly advise your in-laws not to allow the meter to be changed until they are happy with the bills that have been produced. Once the meter has been removed, it will be extremely difficult to find out what the problem is.

    I have had this very conversation with them, they have always been with E-on (previously Powergen and EMEB) they have NEVER moved! Despite lots of conversation they are just awkward, but thats in-laws for you!

    To give you an idea of why the use is so high.....
    They are running..... 3 fridges, 1 chest freezer, the biggest TV I have ever seen (on all day!), CCTV System, 4 computers either on or standby, normal (60w/100w) lights, halogen flood lights. And my brother in-law goes home and uses the tumble dryer for 1 item! #

    Personally I was not suprised by the size of the bill, they are only £32 debt after all the DD's, it's just purely wasting electric thats the problem here nothing else! The meter has been there about 20 years plus so is due for change.

  • This shows why billing E7 on a single rate isn't a great idea. The guys you referred to who want to change the meter will fit an E7 meter so you may have to get the billing corrected again. If they change supplier the same confusion will re-occur.

    If they have no need for E7 personally I'd arrange the meter change to single rate (given that the meter is due to be changed anyway).

    Not that clear, they changed to dual fuel with E-on, in other words moved gas from British Gas to E-on, electric was with with the origional supplier already.
