New sat nav

I am tempted by a new sat nav (we have a Garmin Nuvi - don't have the ref. to hand) which is pretty basic and anything but reliable. I have seen the newer generation of Nuvi's advertised, the 3790T is a beauty, but looks aside, are those newer models any more reliable/useful ?

Part of the problem is that my husband refuses to pay to update the maps, saying that for the price of the update, we might as well sell the existing model and upgrade. I am sure that it has some logic in it, but you try remembering that when you're in the middle of Cornwall in a place so obscure it doesn't even feature on the map of Great Britain and you're only relying on the sat nav

Thank you in advance. We've had countless arguments over the years about map reading/getting lost. etc. and I now dread driving anywhere new with Him at the wheel
Keep calm and carry on

  • I/We have had garmins for 9 years (1 was nicked and Garmin have said it won't be able to upgrade ... yeah ok :D) but the second one a Nuvi 660 (now 3-4 years old) is great as was the now (stuck on the M25 lost one). There is now an option with Garmin to pay approx 75 quid for a lifetime upgrade for maps(the s/w is free AFIK). Mind you I presume that the lifetime of the map upgrade means the sat-nav not me , therefore the Wife will able to find the Crematorium without following the hearse assuming that the Garmin is still functioning

PS if there is a new map release they (garmin) allow you a free map update , i think that last's for 6 months after purchase.

HTH , or at least makes you smile

I use a low end TomTom and it is excellent.
I have today bought a TomTom XL Ed 2 for my son's Christmas present (4.3" screen , lane guidance ,text to speech etc.)
Ordered it online from Halfords ( through the site below) and by doing so got a discount in addition to the instore discount. In addition by going through http://www.topcashback.co.uk I will get a further reduction to approx £111.
    Forgotten but not gone.
