My MFW Diary

  • Today I've run out of new ideas of how I can generate more cash to throw at the mortgage, I did pay another £6 off lol, it may only be £6 but it all adds up. The reason for the odd amount is I purchased a little Christmas something for myself off Amazon before I started this crusade but they notified me it wasn't in stock and cancelled the order, I found the same product at Dabs for £6 so as I would have spent it anyway.....

Some other little savings I've discovered along the short journey so far.
1: Tesco ground coffee and beans are (for me) one of the best readily available coffees and much cheaper than the Lavazza I was drinking.
2: Aldi (a shop I have never been in before) bog roll 9 pack is actually no less soft than the one with a dog on the packed and again much cheaper!

Must discover some more bargain essentials.

Oh and will do at least another hour overtime tonight.
    Mortgage Balance @ 30/06/10 = £104,975.07
    Overpaid since 13/12/10 = £218.96
    Overtime since 13/12/10 = £257.11 pre tax
Ebay, pennies and others since 13/12/10 = £50

You are the same age as my OH and I wish he had half as much motivation with the mortgage :rotfl:so well done :T

It's hard when the mortgage is in it's infancy to find the motivation as the numbers don't go down very fast but I've been told it's worth it in the end:rotfl:

That's the mindset we're using, we also bought 2007 and could be in negative equity but round us nothing is selling so it is very hard to see what anything is 'really' worth. I agree with toots it doesn't really matter in the end as it's home
    OPs so far £42,139

  • Welcome flatmate, and good luck on your journey!

Have you tried selling your books on Amazon - I use it, it is much easier and quicker than ebay (no photo needed). Just type in the ISBN off the back and you can see what they are selling for second hand. Only downside is it may take some time to sell. There is a few old threads on selling on Amazon here I learnt a lot from.

Definitely have a nosy round the diaries to pick up tips - one from me is that making your own lunch every day will save you ££££s!

  • Sara try letting him play around with the Excel mortgage calculator thingy, I know I would have probably spent the money on a new camera (I'm still aiming to buy it) if I couldn't play about with the numbers and see how much of a difference a small amount of overpaying this early on can make.

Cheers museumworker ;) I've always thought that Amazon Marketplace had much higher fees than ebay though? Will look into it tomorrow.

Did another 1 hour 15 mins of overtime today and when I got home a national newspaper had emailed asking to publish one of my pictures over Christmas :D.

  • Quick update for today, I already do my own lunched ;), pasta, chilli, curries, casserole etc, so much better than the overpriced sandwiches everyone else gets :D. Even converted a few as they walk past every day saying that smells lovely.

Another hour of overtime tonight! Miht do the same tomorrow if I'm not too tired and can handle the drunkards going home from their Christmas parties on the train.

All that overtime will add up Flatmate. I've sold a few books on amazon and much prefer it to ebay.

  • I'm following your diary flatmate. I would love to start reducing my mortgage but have a couple of credit cards that I need to concentrate on first. However I like reading other people's MFW diaries and wish you lots of luck with your endeavours.

    Hi Flatmate,

You sound really inspired and on the ball. Well done so far and good luck for future OP. :T

I'm a 'monthly' type person too so it can be a bit tedious throughout the month when I'm not really doing anything towards OP as mine is set up to go out on SO each month.

I do however have an attic full of stuff that I could ebay/boot sale but I'm just too tired after work to get it together. :o I might just take some inspiration from you and get at least some done over the Christmas break. Although I had intended to recrunch my numbers to see if I can scrape some more savings or OP. Hmmm, will have to see.

Have you seen the MFW 2011 thread? You can set a target for the year, get a number and monitor how your doing. I highly recommend it.

Oh, and for bargain essentials and grocery shopping generally the Grocery Challenge threads offer terrific support. :D

Anyway, just wanted to say welcome and good luck really. I'll watch your journey with interest.

    Take care,
    Spigs

  • Quick update, no overtime tonight as it's too cold and knowing my luck the trains would break and too many Christmas parties in London tonight for that lark.
Did overpay another 30.96 :D (little bits all add up). Need to get money bags to get the £50 in change I found into the bank and off against the mortgage. Time to treat myself to a couple of beverages for being well behaved so far.
