Hi Folks
My son is due home from Thailand in the next 48hrs, but near the end of his 1st week he got caught up in torrential rain & flooding on Koh Samui I think its called? Due to the weather, the air conditioning unit in his room malfuctioned and leaked water over his brand new mobile phone during the night. The phone is stone dead & he has managed to keep in touch with us via Internet cafes. I've checked his travel insurance but no surprise, the very small print says mobiles not covered! He got a letter from the hotel explaining their fault though, so does he have any redress with anyone to save having to find £400+ to replace his HTC Desire?
All advice greatfully received.:)

Mobiles are sometimes covered as additions to Home Insurance policies or packaged bank accounts.0

Sorry to hear about the phone but when I travel I only take a very cheap phone and cheap MP3 etc. If I lost the lot it wouldn't add up to the excess on a normal travel insurance policy so I don't have to worry about them.0

Erm, if the hotel broke it, they should pay for it ? although actually getting the money would'nt be easy i guess!0

yes, i hope he would have some redress against the hotel, particularly as he has got written aknowledgement that they are at fault...but how to proceed?
Thanks for the replies thus far...as for having an expensive phone, its a free upgrade but to replace it is extortionate! as suggested, definately take a steam/coal driven one next time abroad!0 -
I've just come back from Samui where I got caught up in the rain with my iphone in my pocket on the wrong side of the island! It stopped working but after leaving it to dry out for a few days it's now mostly come back to life. Unless he's been staying in one of the expensive internationally owned hotels he won't get anything back, this is Thailand and the phone is worth the equivalent of wages working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for 2/3 months.... He'll just have to take it as a bit of an expensive lesson I'm afraid.Mortgage Balance @ 30/06/10 = £104,975.07
Overpaid since 13/12/10 = £218.96
Overtime since 13/12/10 = £257.11 pre tax
Ebay, pennies and others since 13/12/10 = £500
