Anyone answer this question for me please about laptops?

Thinking of buying one from comet £399.99 an Acer something or other.Went to look at it but was told you don`t get back up discs with laptops anymore and you have to make your own, is this right?
As you will guess i`ve no idea about laptops, lol

Do you know what? I thought that but I was pricing up a Dell the other day for the in-laws and was staggered to see that a recovery disk on some models is an optional extra costing £5.88! £5.88 !!!!!!!!!! Ludicrous.

even though it might not come with a disk sometimes pressing F11 at startup will take you in to a complete system restore (only need in extreme cases).

I got a new PC a couple of months ago, a program automatically came up asking if I wanted to create recovery disks, it is also on my progams menu
  • The Acer is a good deal and you can make your own recovery discs anyway. Its a very nice laptop for the money.

If you are getting a Dell, don't pay the £5.88. Wait til its delivered then order them FREE from customer service.

It really isnt surprising is it that when you are looking at the ultra budget end of the market that they are cutting out everything that they can to get their costs down and then charging ott for any optional extras you add?

  • I'm looking at a Dell pc purchase for a friend - just what does a 'recovery disc' create? Are they different from the £5.88 OS discs to buy? (eg Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 (Incl Operating System Re-installation CD) [add £5.88] )

I'm wondering cos say, if after 12 months/waranty period the hard-drive crashes and I buy another, not from Dell, will I be able to install the OS on the new hard-drive???

probably not as it will be made for dell machines and it will made for the computer it was purchaced for as it will be an oem copy (oem= original equipment manufacturer)
