Landlord Associations – Recommendations, Please

Following one of my earlier posts, Bitter And Twisted (thanks again :T) recommended that I join a landlord’s association to help understand all legal responsibilities etc. relating to being a first time landlord.

I’ve had a Google during today, and a look through some previous forum posts, and both the NLA and RLA associations seem to get good write-ups.

Can anyone confirm these are OK and / or recommend others, please – particularly in relation to first-time landlords? I’d just like a check, prior to spending the joining fee, as I don’t want to make a costly error.

Note – I’m based near Poole in Dorset.

Thanks as ever for all advice.

PS
I’m also waiting for the Tessa Shepperson book to be delivered from Amazon.

I went for the nla, purely as I preferred their website. Their telephone advice line is fantastic too.
Whichever you choose, it won't be a costly error. First, it's under £100 for a year (even with the first year joining fee), and secondly, it's tax deductable.

and thirdly you get property insurance cheaper as an NLA member plus a whole load of discounts on other products and services.

tessa shepperson has a £80 per year membership offer until midnight tonight - after which it goes up to £180 pa. for her website - but she does not do individual case advice as does NLA on its legal h elp line
  • There's an NLA group meets in Bournemouth...

I've always found their insurance more expensive than my renewal quotes, even with the discount.

Tenant referencing discount is good though.

I use the NLA. You can access their online documents like ASTs to print and they have seminars in local areas, so you get advice and updates on what is changing and what you need to be aware of as a LL.

I must also add, that I use our solicitor if ever unsure about anything (not that it happens that often thankfully) as it is always best to do things right and I would never fully rely on getting internet advice if in a quandry about anything and the law. That said have asked the people on NLA for advice in the past and it has been very good and helpful. Certainly worth joing a LL Association as it shows you take your job seriously. :)

AFIAA Tessa does however offer a Fixed Fee for individual advice for members, and there is a forum on which she answers queries.
