Default program issue

Hello,
Hope someone has an idea about how to tackle this one as I have exhausted Google's suggestions
I suspect I need to dosomething in the registry?
Long story short... I needed to open some files with a non-standard extension in Filemaker 11. Turns out there's some glitch that stops FM11 from appearing in the choice of programs, meaning you can't set it as the default program. Unfortunately by the time I noticed this, I had inadvertently set the default as adobe reader...
So now I can only open these files by browsing to them via FM11. Very annoying. I am unable to change the default (as above) and 'always use the selected program...' is greyed out (as there is no alternative program to select)
Can I somehow delete the default program connection?
Many thanks in advance...

right click on one of the said files.
choose 'open with'
select 'choose default program'
a box opens, in the bottom right select 'browse'
go the the place the said program you want opening the file is installed and select that file. (you have to choose the actual one that you would click to open the program, the one where the short cut on the desktop or start menu points to)

Thank you, but due to the glitch I mentioned in the 2nd paragraph, I can't 'change' the default program (because the one I want to change it to does not appear)
It shows when I browse, but not in the selection of programs I can use to set the default. My TV is broken!

i think you can actually browse to the .exe file of the application in your program files folder0

Thanks closed, that seems to be along the right lines, but again, the file has a non standard extension, so would it help?
Edit: site is blocked by our web filters as hacker-related

I use http://defaultprogramseditor.com/ on Windows 7. I'm not sure if it supports earlier versions of the O.S.0

Well, they keep the filters very tight as most of our users can't be trusted.
Happy to use regedit, but I am pretty unfamiliar with the registry and I wouldn't know which bit to edit.My TV is broken!
