I guess the lesson to learn here is change your card every year...and read through those numerous T&C's that get posted.

Or just check the details on your statement - it quite clearly says on mine each month, as part of the 'cashback' section 'please note that no rebate payment will be made if, in the twelve months preceding your card anniversary date, the amount of rebate earned totals less than £25'.

Is this on online statements too?
I can't say I have ever seen it (although I do make other attempts to familiarise myself with the rules).
  • They have just taken my £114 cashback as apparently I was just £115 short of the £3k minimum annual spend.

They didn't bother to tell me at any stage that I was falling short and their statements don't bother to tell you how much you have spent vs the annual minimum so its somewhat difficult to identify if you are in this position.

In addition their statements aren't very clear on this as they mix the terms cashback and rebate.

They didn't even bother to send me a letter to explain - it was just hidden on one of my statements that they had taken it back.

To add to this by giving me an artificially low limit of £1k (with upto a month and a half before they take the payment) it would be extremely difficult to hit the £3k annual spend without breaching the credit limit.

Their customer service response was - well it's in our T&C so tough

Needless to say that I have asked to cancel my card, wont be dealing with them again and will take this to the FOS.

So if you have one of these cards beware and complain if you are unhappy.

Was that question in response to a particular post in this thread? I haven't seen anything which I would consider rude.

I don't consider my statements to be rude but frequently harsh.
I get fed up with people coming on here and defaming decent companies with cries of "ripoff" and "scam" when they've simply missed something very simple.
I don't think it's acceptable to slander/libel (can't remeber which) comapnies on national website in this way.

For example Michael could very easier have worked out how much he spent simply by using a calculator to add up the totals on his statements. Now that's not rocket science to do simple addition of a few months statements (max 12).
He hasn't made any defaming statements but appear to expect Amex to write to him (on knock on his door) to remind him of simple facts.
Personally I think some people have got a cheek with what they expect.
If you want to take advanatge of deals then it's YOUR respoonsibility to work out the Ts & Cs and make sure you meet them.

I agree there is no reason to be rude, but at times some people do need a bit of harshness as they want to blame someone else for something that they are responsible for.
When that goes as far as defamin companies then it's out of order.

That's what 13 years of Labour government does to responsibility.

After opening this credit card in January I have really enjoyed using it so far and already earned £50 cash back. If you struggle to spend on it then you can get additional cards on the account for free which is really good. I have given one to my partner and when he makes a big spend he will put it on my account with his card and then just transfer the funds into my bank account so the money is there when the DD comes out each month.

Yeah Amex is limited usage wise but I have found that it is widely excepted in the places where I spend real money (and ultimately the money that makes the difference!)

Amex text me when I near the limit for which I have set this service for, and also once a week to update me on my balance. This is so good as I have a fairly high credit limit of £2000 but should only spend up to £500 to ensure I can pay the balance in full each month.

I would recommend this card to anyone that lives in a big city (where amex is widely accepted) It really is a good easy to use card and nicely accessible online to keep up to date. Their telephone customer service is also very good! What a refreshing change! :D
