How to recall a payment (lloyds to co-op)

I made a boo boo with my sort-code number, my brother has sent me £30 to buy my sons presents from him but it wont go in to my account thanks to my stupidity.

How do we recall this?

My bank says his bank needs to do it and his bank have said its out of their hands?

Help!

Faster Payments can't be recalled can they?

I suspect you'll have to rely on the details used (account number at the incorrect sort code) not being allocated to another customer, in which case the payment should (eventually) bounce back from a suspense account to his LTSB account.

Was the sort code you gave him a (valid) Co-op sort code? Check here...

If it's gone by FP from LTSB (has it?) then they won't be interested.

If it doesn't (eventually) bounce back, you should assume the details used belong to someone else. You'll then need to write to Co-op, giving sort code/account number details of the:

    sending account (and bank)
    incorrect receiving account
    correct receiving account

Hopefully they'll write to the other account holder requesting permission to remove the £30 and pass it to your account. That was my experience when I received a very large credit by mistake earlier this year.

The sort code is valid for co-op.

Co-op said they cannot tell us if it is a real bank account or if it will be bounced back, i just want a yes or no answer, not names and addresses!

A couple of suggestions to put your mind at ease/speed things up by writing to the Co-op:

Google 'bank account validation' and check the details there.

Many online credit card application forms validate your bank account details as you go, generating an error message if the details don't exist. So start a dummy credit card application, just don't use your real details!

Yes its a valid account number too, do i need to write to tamworth branch or does the sender (my brother) need to write?

Are there any better worded letter templates out there too?

    or would

    Dear Tamworth Branch....

I transfered the sum of £30 on the 12/12/10 at 10.38pm to a bank account held by your branch from LTSB xx-xx-xx 2222222, unfortunately it has appeared to have been credited to the wrong account instead of xx-xx-x4 1111111 it should have gone to xx-xx-x7 1111111 at co-operative Bristol branch.

As the fund credited are not intended for the first recipient they are not legally entitled to spend them as this is classed as theft, I would be very grateful if you could return the funds to its original source as soon as possible.

    Yours faithfully

The letter needs to come from you, the bank's customer...not someone else who has sent the money.

Also, how about something a little less threatening and a little more apologetic, bearing in mind this letter (or at least the content of it) will find it's way to the account holder? Maybe even play on their heartstrings and mention that the funds were to be used to purchase Xmas pressies for your little ones...
    Dear Co-op,

    Acc:.........xxxxxx
    Sort code..xxxxxxxx

I'm afraid I gave the wrong sort code to someone in order that they could pay £30 into the above referenced account held in my name. As a result, the funds (which have come from LTSB [sort code]/[account number] on xx/xx/xx) have gone to [sort code]/[account number], which I understand is a valid account held at different branch.

I appreciate this is entirely my own fault, but would be grateful if you could forward a copy of this letter to the account holder in order that they may agree to your moving the £30 from their account to mine.

If you require any further details please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks for your co-operation in this matter.

    Yours etc
