Persian kitten advice

My new kitten is getting sticky eye. I know you can get special wipes for them - my sister has some for her dog. But does anyone have any ms advice for me for cheaper alternatives please?

Also do Persians eat dried food ok, or are they best with wet food?

Also he has been living outside and I am struggling to get him to use a litter tray. Any advice would be welcomed. It's a while since I had a kitten.

HI you need to wipe the eye/eyes with soft cloth or cotten wool and luke warm water as often as you can they will soon clearer up.
I feed my ragdoll, samiese and tonkanise on both they have 2 dishes with tin food and one dish with dry complate and I always make sure
that they are always full, you will find that for the first 12mths they do eat a lot as it been wormed ?? if not go on line and get some wormers the vet wont sell them if they hav'nt seen the kitten ...... as for litter training I dont use litter trays as the cat litter ends up all on the floor I use tidy bins......... you can get them from pound shops.... you will have to watch when you see it scratching or going into a couner pick it up and put it in the tray dont clean the tray out every day just take the poo out so the kitten will get the smell of were to go........
    good luck .....

Apologies if this is a silly question, but where did you get this kitten from? You should have been provided with information regarding feeding etc. Depending on the kitten's age it should already have had it's first vaccination or you should have been advised to take it to the vet's to get it, and also to obtain advice on a worming and flea/tick programme.

If you have had all of this I would still suggest that your kitten needs to see the vet to make sure that there is not an underlying cause to the sticky eye that needs antibiotics?

You can get dry food for persians that have additional nutrients in to help with their coats. I have two long haired cats that are fed on dry food and I also feed them Iceland white fish. Occasionally they will have foil trays of wet food, but seem to prefer the dry biscuits. Dry food is left down all day. Their coats are fab - very shiny and silky which I believe is helped by the diet.

If you've done all of the initial vet checks etc, then apologies for raising the issue, but from your post it appears that you might have taken on a speciality breed kitten without being fully aware of what is involved. P.S. forgot to let you know about the regular grooming that it will need.

Yes both Hills Science and Royal Canine do special food for perisans. They need smaller sized dried bits in the food.

Cleaning the eyes and the nose as well. Boiled water let cool to lukewarm and then not shedding cotton wool and dry. Oh and a fresh piece for each eye.
  • well, things have sorted themselves out - using the litter tray, eating and drinking, playing and purring. He's a lovely little thing - a surprise present from one of my sons and his wife. We saw him when they got their moggie kittens 6 weeks ago, but the persian was same age (8 weeks) but too little to go.

My son knew I'd been taken with him, so they rang and reserved him for me, and took me on Sunday to collect him.

Have got a book from the library about persian cats so can read up about them. Have bought him a grooming brush, and he is very clean himself too.

Thank you for all your help.
  • Hi I have 3 Burmese Cats & a Selkirk Rex, we get the occasional sticky eye ( not uncommon in cats, can be a stress thing too) and a good tip I got from a breeder was to buy a tube of "golden eye" from boots pharmacy. Think it's around £4-£5. It's for humans but works a treat for minor infections and has always worked for my cats.

Just make sure you apply it to a clean cotton bud each time you use.

Saves paying vet fees when there is no need.

My friend also uses on her Border Collie and worked a treat.
