How Do I Paint Frames Around Glass Neatly?

Hi All,
I've just bought quite an expensive glazed door which I want to paint. It comes with a film on the glass to protect it from paint or varnish but not sure that is the best way to paint it neatly. I've had some people recommend using tape to mask off the glass and others that say that this is not a good approach. How do the pros approach this - is it just practice and a steady hand?
Any help would be appreciated!

I used masking tape, so long as you apply it firmly enough to prevent seepage underneath, and remove it before the paint is dry. I considered one of those plastic shields that you hold up against the glass, but someone in the local hardware DIY shop commented that it was easy to transfer paint smears from the shield to the glass if you weren't careful.
I'd have thought that if the film is designed for this job, I'd leave it on if you intend to paint the door soon.
But I'm a complete amateur and others may well know better!0 -
I would leave the film on and am a great believer in masking tape.
And single sided razor blades to make the edges all neat and tidy0 -
I found this a few days back and thought it might help - http://www.diy-blog.co.uk/diy/how-to-paint-windows-video_62f480ab8.html0
