Handheld console can't get wi-fi

We have Sky broadband. My son got a DS this year but we cannot get it to connect to the internet. I was told that our town does not get wireless and I would need to buy a dongle, someone else said that you can't connect through Sky and I need to change provider. Neither of these people are particularly techy, and I don't want to do one thing only to find out it was the wrong choice. Does anyone here know about this? Thanks:)

Your advisers are not being very helpful giving you misleading information.
These two sites should help (though you could have found them yourself if you used a search engine):

Do you have a wireless router for your Sky broadband?
It should have a little aerial somewhere.
If you do then you need to ensure that the wireless bit is switched on so that the DS can find it.
The links posted above should help.

Who the hell came out with that rubbish?0 -
First question do you have wifi internet in your home?
If you do the most probable reason is the security you have set up on your home network. The DS uses WEP which is not very secure and your wifi will more than likely use something more secure.
EDIT
This may be what you are looking for.
The bad news is that it looks like it does not like windows 7

Sky routers use WPA security by default.
All Sky routers are wireless.
Follow the advise given above on the Sky broadband help pages, and don't listen to people who know nothing. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Something to note is that the DSlite can only access a WEP connection and although a DSi (the latest one) can access a WPA connection its a little more complicated as its not obvious how to set it up.
See here for a tutorial on both

I had a problem not only connecting a game console to router (latest BT Homehub V2) but also a laptop. To overcome this, I had to:
- Log into router and change security from WPA to WEP. Less secure I know.
- changed SSID broadcast name and network access key (this should be done anyway)
- disabled wireless name/SSID broadcasting i.e. If you perform a search, our router name won't appear.
Once I did this, both console and laptop were able to easily log onto network. As a matter of course as well, I changed the channel router was broadcasting on to prevent conflict.
As a point to note:
- ensure you have updated AV software and firewall protection.
- periodically change password
- if you know how, check access logs to see if any attempts have been made to access your network.
Hope this helps0
