Street Naming

I'm having a bit of trouble with my new build. I move in a couple of weeks so I've told Royal Mail the address should now be activated to receive mail. No problems so far, they have activated the address.

However, Royal Mail are spelling the street name differently! I've checked with the developer and solicitor and they both agree with my spelling and not Royal Mail's. (It's minor, they have added an extra letter!)

Nothing is showing up on VOA yet, they are still deciding the council tax banding. I've spoken to the council but I can't seem to get past the call centre and they can't tell me which is wrong! Although I thought they approved the street name before telling Royal Mail?!

No street sign has been installed yet (still a building site!)

Any ideas where I can check which is right?

It's the council's responsibility to register new build addresses and liaise with Royal Mail to get errors corrected - why can't you get past the call centre?

Several other councils have their policy online, have you checked your council's website?

Sorry, not very helpful, but wanted to say bet there'll always be problems. OMG, so negative lol. My road name ends in '...an Road'. But everyone spells it '...en Road'. Even a roadsign put up by the council was spelt '...en Road'. One side of the road was right, the other side was wrong. I spell it to people on the phone all the time, and they still put '...en Road'. When I bought it, I had 3 different spellings of it on legal documents - sometimes 2 or 3 different spellings in the same doc.

Good luck! Get it sorted from the start, and correct anyone who spells it wrong, or it'll be on their records as wrong for many years to come!

Unfortunately, the one we're moving to ain't much better lol! It's a word (often a surname) that tends to be spelt 3 or 4 different ways (think 'Sharon & Ozzy!). Arghhhh!

Street names with spelling variations are surprisingly quite common and the ambiguity often remains for decades. I know of several villages which have alternative spellings (lived in one myself). It is rarely a major problem.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

As long as you have a postcode that directs businesses and people to the correct house I wouldn't stress.

I found out to my cost a few years ago if people's postcodes don't appear on parcel couriers systems and delivery mens sat navs then you don't get the delivery even if the door number, house name and road name are all given and spelt correctly.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

You could try emailing the Royal Mail to see if there is an error on the Postal Address File......

I've been exchanging emails with them for the last week, I originally emailed them to say the address would be active to receive email from next week which is how I realised their records were different to the ones I had.

Just not asking the right questions my bad, I managed to get past it today by asking to speak directly to the street naming team, put me straight through! They checked their records, found the approval document which approved all the new street names and postcodes and problem answered!

So far only BT and Home Insurance have the now wrong address, so I will call them up to correct it. Thankfully I've sorted out the problem! Now I'm on the PAF hopefully the address will start filtering down into online systems.
